The most useful airport question is not simply how to reach Dubrovnik. It is how to reach the particular door where you are staying. Getting off at the wrong side of the city can add a local ride or an awkward walk with bags, even after an otherwise straightforward flight.
This guide separates the airport arrival from the return journey because the shuttle's Old Town-area stops are not symmetrical. It also separates a published bus fare from a private-transfer quote; the latter needs your actual destination, party and arrival time.
Choose transport by the hotel's final location
| Destination | Useful starting option | The last-leg question |
|---|---|---|
| Old Town | Shuttle to Ploče or a booked transfer to an agreed access point | Which gate and how many steps to the room? |
| Gruž | Shuttle to the main bus station | How far is the accommodation from the station? |
| Lapad | Shuttle plus local connection, or direct transfer | Does the saving justify changing with bags? |
| Hillside or outlying property | Compare a direct vehicle quote | Can the vehicle reach the entrance? |
For one traveler with a small bag, a bus and manageable walk may be the simplest answer. For a family arriving late, an agreed vehicle pickup can reduce several uncertain steps. Compare the whole journey rather than assuming a private transfer is always excessive or a bus always inconvenient.
Ask the accommodation which stop or drop-off they recommend for a first arrival with luggage. Give them the actual arrival time and bag count. A route recommended for a daytime walk without bags may not be the best route after an evening flight.
Airport shuttle: fare, arrival stops and boarding
Platanus lists €10 one way and €15 return. The airport-to-city route stops at Ploče Gate before Gruž main bus station, with departures linked to arrivals. One suitcase is included and a QR ticket can be shown on a phone. The operator's journey estimates depend on traffic. [1]
Keep the ticket and destination available offline. After collecting your bags, confirm the day's boarding location with signs or staff and tell the driver which stop you need. Avoid getting off simply because several other passengers do: their hotels may be in a different part of the city.
The published arrival pattern does not mean a coach waits indefinitely for one delayed passenger. If you are arriving unusually late or need assistance, check arrangements with the operator before travel. Keep a backup vehicle option in mind without prepaying two incompatible transfers.
Old Town arrivals: solve the luggage route first
Ploče is an arrival point near the eastern side of the historic city, not the entrance to every Old Town room. Ask your host for a route from that stop, including steps and any easier alternative gate. Save the accommodation's street address rather than relying solely on its marketing name.
If a transfer drops you at an agreed city access point, clarify where the driving service ends. Carrying luggage to a room may not be included. A driver can do a good job and still be unable to take a vehicle through the pedestrian streets to the property's front door.

An apartment described as just above the Old Town may involve a climb. Before committing, ask about the number of steps, lift access and the distance from a usable road. This is especially important when a member of the party cannot carry a suitcase on stairs.
For a late self-check-in, save the instructions and establish what happens if a door code fails. Keep the host's contact details accessible without mobile data. The transfer is not complete until you can enter the accommodation, so allow time for that final step before making dinner plans.
Lapad and Gruž: compare the complete transfer cost
A Gruž arrival may be convenient for a nearby hotel, coach connection or port departure. Confirm which of those you actually need: the bus station, ferry berth and accommodation are separate points. A map pin for Dubrovnik is too broad to guide a last-minute connection.
For Lapad, check the current local connection or taxi arrangement from the shuttle stop. With two people, the shuttle alone is €20 one way at the listed adult fare; add the final local journey before comparing a direct vehicle quote. This is simple arithmetic, not a claim about the price of a taxi.
If you intend to use the Dubrovnik Pass later, do not assume it covers the airport segment. The official FAQ excludes airport transport. Check the pass's activation consequences before using any included city-bus benefit for the last leg. [3]
Choose the stop with the easiest real connection rather than the shortest straight-line distance. A slightly longer ride to a clear meeting point can be easier than crossing roads and climbing with luggage. Ask the property to recommend a route suitable for your party, not just the fastest route in an app.
Book a private transfer with clear conditions
- Request a total price for your flight, address, passengers and luggage.
- Confirm the meeting point, delay monitoring and included waiting time.
- Specify child seats, mobility needs and any extra stop before paying.
- Save cancellation terms, contact details and the exact city drop-off point.
Compare like with like: a smaller vehicle, limited waiting and no child seat is not the same service as a larger vehicle with those arrangements included. Ask whether the price is per person or per vehicle, and whether the balance is prepaid or collected locally.
If the plane is diverted, canceled or delayed substantially, notify the provider using the agreed channel. A flight number helps only if the contract includes monitoring and the operator has the correct details. Do not assume every prepaid transfer automatically moves to a different day or airport.
For a connection to a ferry or coach, give the provider the departure details but retain your own margin. A road transfer cannot guarantee the operations of a separate transport company. Choose an itinerary that remains plausible under ordinary traffic, not just the fastest navigation estimate.
Return to DBV: use the departure stop, not the arrival stop
The city-to-airport shuttle uses Gruž main bus station, Grawe and the Cable Car stop. The operator identifies platform 8 at the main station and advises arriving at the chosen pickup at least ten minutes early. Check the dated timetable and the stop-specific time. [2]
For an Old Town stay, do not automatically return to the Ploče arrival drop-off. Save the Cable Car departure point and check the luggage route the previous day. If the walk or timing does not suit you, arrange a vehicle from a confirmed accessible pickup point.
Work backward from the airline's airport-arrival requirement, adding the road journey and a traffic margin. The bus station's departure time is not necessarily the same as the time at the later stops. Allow time for ticket checks and do not plan to arrive just as the coach is expected to pull away.
If your final night is on an island or in another city, evaluate the complete chain separately. A mainland night near the departure city can be worth more than the saving from one last distant stay. Missed connections on separate bookings may leave you buying replacement transport yourself.
BEFORE YOU GO
Common questions
Does the airport shuttle stop at Pile Gate?
The Platanus arrival route checked for this guide lists Ploče Gate and Gruž main bus station. Do not replace Ploče with Pile when planning the walk to your hotel; confirm the current route before travel.
Can I use Dubrovnik Pass from the airport?
The airport transfer is excluded. Budget for it separately and check the rules before activating the pass for any city transport afterward.
Is the return shuttle stop the same as the arrival stop?
Not near the Old Town. The return route includes the Cable Car stop, alongside Grawe and Gruž. Save separate instructions for your arrival and departure.
