Croatia's coastline makes location an essential part of seeking care. A clinic on the mainland, a summer tourist surgery and a pharmacy on your island are different services with different hours. Prepare contacts for the base you will actually use, and ask how routine care works after the seasonal visitor clinics finish.

Official and provider information was checked on 13 October 2026. This guide covers contact routes, paperwork and payment questions, without diagnosing symptoms or choosing treatment. Examples from Split-Dalmatia illustrate why the date and provider status matter; they do not establish the same arrangements across every Croatian county. Ask the healthcare service about the present situation.

Use 112 or 194 and give a precise mainland or island location

SituationFirst contactLocation detail
Emergency on land112 or medical emergency 194Town, address, building entrance and callback number
Emergency on an island112 or 194Island name, town and exact access point
Routine consultationLocal clinic or health centreAppointment, department and current hours
Pharmacy enquiryLocal pharmacy or its duty serviceDate, closing time and medicine information

Use the Croatian street name from your accommodation confirmation, and save its map position offline. On an island, a familiar place name alone can be ambiguous. State both the island and town; if you are away from a road, describe the access route accurately and let responders advise you. A lodging address is only helpful if that is where the patient is.

For an incident on a boat, inform the skipper immediately and use the emergency procedure for that vessel. The government also lists 195 for maritime search and rescue. Do not attempt to arrange a sightseeing boat as an improvised rescue transfer. The crew and emergency service need the vessel's actual position and incident details. [1]

Check the date of a tourist clinic before traveling there

The Split-Dalmatia County Health Centre's 2026 tourist-clinic page describes a summer period ending on 30 September, with some listed locations ending earlier. That published schedule is already past on this guide's check date. It should not be treated as proof that a dedicated tourist clinic is open in October. [2]

The same page says that when its tourist clinics are not operating, patients and tourists can use healthcare teams contracted with HZZO during their working hours. Ask the local health centre for the appropriate current service, appointment procedure and location. We have not confirmed an individual October appointment or a new summer schedule for 2027. [2]

A routine enquiry should include the patient's age and the type of assessment needed. Confirm language support for the actual shift, whether a referral is required and how much time to allow. Ask for the entrance or room rather than relying on a pin for a large hospital complex. A general switchboard and emergency dispatch are different contacts.

For Hvar, Brač, Korčula or a smaller island, identify the local service before leaving the mainland. Check routine access separately from emergency arrangements. If your ongoing treatment needs a particular specialist, confirm that service with a provider before choosing a remote base; a nearby clinic sign is not evidence of specialist capacity.

Ask whether this visit uses HZZO or private billing

HZZO explains that eligible visitors insured under the relevant EU, EEA, Swiss or UK arrangements can obtain necessary care during a temporary stay with the appropriate entitlement documents. Its guidance names an EHIC or replacement certificate and specifies providers contracted with HZZO. Eligibility depends on the insurance arrangement, not simply on carrying a passport from one of those countries. [3]

For eligible UK visitors, FCDO identifies GHIC or EHIC use for medically necessary state healthcare. It also explains that these cards do not replace travel insurance and do not cover private healthcare or medical repatriation. Confirm your own eligibility and the route for that particular treatment with the relevant institution. [4]

Ask before a routine visitWhy it mattersDocument to prepare
Is this treatment provided under your HZZO contract?A provider may also offer privately billed servicesValid entitlement card or replacement evidence, if eligible
What patient contribution or private charge applies?Public entitlement does not necessarily mean no billIdentification and payment method
Can my insurer authorize payment here?A policy is separate from the provider's billing arrangementPolicy number and assistance case reference
What happens if I lack the entitlement document? The correct next step depends on your issuing institutionContact for the institution that issued your cover

If you have no applicable public entitlement, ask about self-payment and travel-insurance arrangements. Do not borrow another person's card or assume a relative's eligibility extends to you. For an emergency, seek help first and resolve documents with the service and insurer as soon as practicable.

Find the pharmacy for your town and the time of your visit

The Split-Dalmatia county pharmacy institution publishes pharmacy locations and a duty-pharmacy section. Its directory includes mainland and island locations, which makes it a useful starting point for a stay in that county. A directory listing is not proof of today's opening time or stock. Use the current branch information and telephone the pharmacy before making a special trip. [5]

Ask a clinic or accommodation host to help find a dežurna ljekarna, the local term for a duty pharmacy, when ordinary hours have ended. Use the service for the correct town or county. A late-opening pharmacy in Split does not tell you what is available on Vis or in Dubrovnik, and an island location does not mean all-night dispensing.

Bring the active ingredient, strength, dosage form and prescription information for regular medication. Ask the pharmacist whether your prescription can be dispensed under the applicable rules and whether a local consultation is needed. We have not verified acceptance of every foreign prescription, controlled medicine or individual product; do not build your supply plan on that assumption.

Ask how you will receive written instructions and what to do if the named medicine is unavailable. Discuss any replacement with the pharmacist and, where required, the prescribing clinician. A matching package color or similar brand name is not enough to establish that a product is the intended medicine.

Prepare identification and a record that can follow you

  • Carry identification, entitlement documents if applicable, and the insurance assistance number.
  • Keep a list of regular medicines and allergies, plus relevant reports from your home clinician.
  • Save the treating facility's name, address, contact and patient reference.
  • Ask for an itemized invoice, payment evidence, medical report and prescriptions or discharge instructions.

For a multi-stop route, make the records available at your next base without depending on a message arriving while you are boarding a ferry. Ask the clinic when outstanding results will be ready and how they will reach you. A receipt confirms a financial transaction; it does not replace clinical information needed by the next doctor.

If a companion helps, agree who contacts the insurer and who stores the records. Keep copies in a secure place and share them directly with the relevant healthcare service or insurer. An accommodation host may help with a phone call or taxi, but does not need the entire medical history.

Before paying a routine bill, clarify whether it is a patient contribution, private treatment fee or deposit, and ask which document shows that distinction. If you believe the entitlement was applied incorrectly, keep the evidence and contact the issuing institution or HZZO for the proper route. Do not assume that a later claim will recover every charge.

Plan regular treatment around the route, not the ferry timetable

Discuss necessary ongoing care with your own clinician before departure. Give them the actual towns, islands, duration and planned activities, and ask which records should travel with you. If specialist treatment must occur during the trip, obtain a provider's confirmation before committing to accommodation and transport. A necessary-care card for a holiday is not a general authorization for planned overseas treatment. [3]

Check the import requirements for each medicine with the relevant authorities, particularly where a controlled ingredient or medical device is involved. This guide does not publish a blanket Croatian quantity allowance. Keep the medicine's identity and prescribed use clear, and confirm airline or ferry carriage conditions separately where they matter.

  1. Before an island stay, confirm routine care contacts and keep the emergency numbers offline.
  2. Arrange enough lawful medicine supply and a clinician's contingency plan for a delayed journey.
  3. After treatment, ask the medical team whether travel should change and how follow-up will work.
  4. Coordinate any medically necessary transfer with the service and insurer rather than selecting transport from a tourist timetable.

Use the Croatia insurance guide for the broader policy comparison and the island transport guides for ordinary travel planning. When medical needs arise, the healthcare team should determine the appropriate next step; a convenient ferry departure cannot establish that the patient is ready to travel.

BEFORE YOU GO

Common questions

What number reaches medical emergency help in Croatia?

Call 112 for emergency services or 194 for emergency medical help. Give your precise location, including the island and town where relevant, and follow instructions. [1]

Are tourist clinics open throughout the year?

Do not assume so. Split-Dalmatia's published 2026 tourist-clinic schedule ends in September. Its health centre directs patients to contracted healthcare teams during their working hours when those clinics are closed. Verify the current service locally. [2]

Does a GHIC or EHIC cover a private clinic?

Do not assume it does. HZZO's temporary-stay route specifies contracted providers, and FCDO excludes private healthcare from its GHIC/EHIC explanation. Ask whether the particular service is under an HZZO contract and what patient charges apply. [3] [4]
