Money and Tipping in Sri Lanka: Cash, Cards and Everyday Payments
Plan Sri Lankan rupee cash, card backups, exchange and driver payments, while keeping optional tips separate from quoted prices and service charges.

Sri Lanka's money plan should follow the route. A central hotel with card payment, a small guesthouse, a safari balance and a driver paid at the end of several days can create different requirements. Knowing the total trip budget is not enough if the money is in a form the next supplier cannot accept.
We do not publish one mandatory tipping percentage or a claim that a particular ATM is free for every overseas card. The useful preparation is a payment ledger, working backups and a clear agreement with the people providing the booked services.
Use rupees for the everyday budget
Sri Lanka Tourism identifies the local currency as the Sri Lankan rupee and recommends smaller-denomination notes for modest purchases. Prices may use LKR or Rs; do not confuse a local rupee amount with a US-dollar quote for a hotel or tour. [1]
| Payment | Plan before the trip | Check locally |
|---|---|---|
| Meals and small journeys | Keep a manageable rupee cash reserve | Price and available change |
| Hotel balance | Save the contracted currency and inclusions | Final total and accepted card |
| Driver or guide | Agree deposit, balance and due date | Receipt and agreed payment method |
| Heritage admission | Check the visitor category and current official price | Any rupee conversion used by the issuer |
For an international quote, ask what currency will actually be charged. A business may display dollars but collect rupees using its stated conversion, or it may bill in the quoted foreign currency. Record the agreement instead of assuming the amount shown in your home-currency search result is fixed.
Separate the arrival cash from the whole holiday budget. You need enough for the first practical expenses, not necessarily every meal for two weeks. Reassess before moving to an area where obtaining more cash would require a separate journey.
Exchange money through authorized providers
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka instructs the public to use authorized dealers or money changers for foreign-currency exchange. Use the provider's displayed authorization and keep a receipt; an informal offer of a better rate is not the same service. [2]
Compare the amount you will receive after any commission, not only the largest number on a board. Make clear which currency you are selling and which you are buying. Count the cash before leaving the counter and check whether the denominations will be practical for the next few days.
If you exchange a foreign note, ask about its condition and denomination requirements before handing over a large amount. Do not assume every provider accepts every currency or damaged note. Keep unused emergency cash separate from the notes you spend each day.
Avoid using a heritage site's ticket conversion as a general market exchange rate. A price table may show a specific rupee amount for a dollar-denominated admission; that is the issuer's current ticket calculation, not a promise that your bank or money changer will use the same rate.
Cards and ATMs: distinguish three different costs
A card transaction can involve the merchant's billing currency, your card issuer's conversion and an optional home-currency conversion offer. Visa explains that dynamic currency conversion must give the cardholder a choice and display the exchange rate and relevant fees. Read the screen before accepting. [3]
Our practical default is to consider paying in the transaction's local currency unless you have compared the offered conversion and prefer it. That does not mean your issuer charges nothing. Check the card's foreign-transaction and cash-withdrawal terms before leaving home.
| Possible cost | Who sets it | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| ATM operator charge | The machine's operator | Fee displayed before withdrawal |
| Card issuer charge | Your bank or card provider | Overseas withdrawal and transaction terms |
| Optional conversion markup | The conversion provider | Exchange rate, currency and total offered |
A rejected withdrawal can come from a card limit, security check, machine problem or insufficient available balance. Keep a second method rather than repeatedly trying the same transaction without understanding the result. Save your issuer's contact details and make sure you can complete any required account verification abroad.
Agree driver, guide and safari payments in advance
For a multi-day driver, record the total price, deposit paid, remaining balance, currency and settlement date. Add what is included: vehicle, driver accommodation and meals, tolls, parking, extra mileage, waiting and agreed stops. The person collecting payment should be the one identified by the booking arrangement.
For a safari, ask which part of the quote covers the park permit and which covers the vehicle or guiding. Paying a jeep deposit does not necessarily settle admission for every passenger. Establish whether any remaining amount must be paid in cash and how it is calculated if the group or park changes.
- Save a written quote and the cancellation deadline before sending a deposit.
- Record each payment against the agreed total.
- Confirm the balance and method before the final day of service.
- Request a receipt and keep it until any remaining questions are resolved.
Do not wait until a remote pickup to discover that the operator expects a large cash balance. Equally, do not carry a large amount solely because someone once said all drivers require cash. Ask your actual provider and plan around the answer.
Service charges and tips are different questions
Read the menu or quote for included and additional charges, then compare the final itemized bill. A service charge already in the bill is part of that transaction's stated pricing; a discretionary tip is an extra amount you decide to leave. Ask about an unexplained line rather than guessing from its abbreviation.

We do not treat a single percentage as compulsory across restaurants, hotels, guides and drivers. Choose a tip according to the service, your budget and the length of the arrangement. If several travelers share a guide, agree whether you are contributing individually or as a group so the same intended amount is not multiplied by accident.
For a long driver booking, keep the agreed contract price separate from any optional thank-you at the end. A tip should not be used to resolve a disagreement about an unpaid fee that was never made clear. Settle the documented bill first and discuss any discrepancy calmly with the supplier.
Carry some smaller notes if you intend to tip in cash. You should not need to make an unnecessary purchase or expose your entire travel cash reserve to find an appropriate amount. There is no need to explain your budget to every person who offers help.
Keep a reserve and finish the trip deliberately
- Store the backup card separately from the everyday wallet.
- Track balances still owed in the original booking currency.
- Keep emergency funds outside the daily meal and activity allowance.
- Check refund confirmations until the money actually returns.
A change in transport can produce an extra hotel night, another vehicle journey or a replacement ticket. The reserve should be usable for those needs, not already committed to optional shopping. Its size depends on the route and the contracts you have chosen; we have not invented a universal emergency-cash amount.
Before the final day, review remaining rupees and known expenses. Keep enough for the airport journey and anything still unpaid, then use the remainder intentionally. Avoid unnecessary spending simply to empty the wallet, and retain exchange and booking receipts until the account is settled.
BEFORE YOU GO
Common questions
Can I use only a card in Sri Lanka?
Do not build the whole route around that assumption. Confirm larger bookings and carry a modest rupee reserve for payments where your particular card cannot be used. Keep a separate backup method.
Should I pay a driver in dollars or rupees?
Use the currency and method agreed in the written quote. Confirm how a foreign-currency quote is converted if payment is collected in rupees, and record deposits so they are deducted correctly.
Is a service charge the same as a tip?
No. Check the charges already included in the bill before choosing any discretionary extra. There is no single compulsory tipping percentage used throughout this guide.
