IST or SAW: Choosing an Istanbul Airport and Planning Connections

Compare Istanbul Airport and Sabiha Gökçen by hotel location, public transport, total transfer cost and the risks of separate-ticket connections.

The word Istanbul on two tickets does not mean the aircraft use the same airport. IST is Istanbul Airport; SAW is Sabiha Gökçen. Confirm these three-letter codes before paying for a domestic connection, arranging a driver or choosing a hotel described as being near the airport.

Neither airport is universally the better choice. A convenient flight time, a hotel on the appropriate side of the city and a workable onward connection can outweigh a modest airfare difference. The comparison below is designed around those decisions rather than an airport ranking.

Compare the complete journey

Rail connections are confirmed by the transport ministry and SAW's airport guide. Door-to-door suitability depends on your address. [2] [1]

Add baggage and the transfer to the airfare comparison before deciding. A cheaper arrival after public transport has finished may need a more expensive ride and late check-in. A slightly dearer daytime flight may leave time to reach the hotel, eat and sleep normally before sightseeing.

Check the return flight separately. It can be sensible to arrive at one airport and leave from the other when the route and hotel locations support that choice. It is not sensible to discover the different code only when the car reaches the wrong terminal.

SAW: M4 and the Asian-side approach

SAW's official airport guide identifies M4 as the airport metro. It connects with Marmaray at Ayrılık Çeşmesi and with ferries at Kadıköy; the airport also identifies an interchange with Metrobus at Ünalan. These connections make the exact hotel address more useful than a broad promise of 'easy access to central Istanbul'. [1]

For Kadıköy, compare the metro plus the final walk with a direct road transfer. For a European-side hotel, map the onward connection before choosing the flight. Count walking through interchanges and handling luggage, not only time inside moving trains. A route can be affordable and still be inconvenient for a traveler with several bags.

The M4 station called Pendik should not be treated as a same-platform connection to the high-speed railway. The airport describes an onward bus connection for that journey. If a train departure is part of your arrival day, verify the exact station and transfer route rather than relying on a shared district name. [1]

IST: use current M11 information

The transport ministry confirms operation of the extended Gayrettepe–Istanbul Airport–Halkalı line following the June 2026 opening. Older maps that end the route before Halkalı can therefore be incomplete. Use the current network and service notices when selecting your interchange. [2]

For many European-side itineraries, the Gayrettepe connection to M2 is an option to compare; the destination hotel determines the remaining journey. Do not interpret a train's airport-to-interchange time as the airport-to-hotel time. Walking inside the terminal and station, waiting, changing lines and reaching the room all belong in the plan.

If using a coach, select the actual stop and inspect the last part of the trip. A coach to a district is not automatically a hotel drop-off. For a private transfer, provide the flight number and full address and ask how the driver handles a delayed arrival or a street the vehicle cannot enter.

Changing between IST and SAW

SAW's official site lists a Havaist connection to Istanbul Airport and locates the pickup in the open parking area opposite arrivals. Confirm the current departure, fare and travel estimate for your date; a listed service is not a guarantee that it fits a particular connection. [3]

Treat the airport change as a separate landside journey. If arriving internationally, verify your right to enter Türkiye for your passport and itinerary before booking. Collecting luggage, finding the departure point and checking in again are not included in a road journey estimate. Traffic and service disruption can add uncertainty.

If a booking website presents both flights together, read who provides connection protection and exactly what it covers. A single checkout screen does not by itself prove that the airlines will handle a missed connection or move the bags between airports.

Baggage and separate tickets

Turkish Airlines publishes different transfer procedures for single-ticket and separate-ticket itineraries. In its separate-ticket international-arrival examples, passengers may need to collect luggage and check in again. Confirm the procedure for your specific airlines and ticket combination rather than assuming the same rule applies to every connection. [4]

  1. Check both airport codes, local dates and flight numbers.
  2. Ask the operating airlines whether baggage is checked through and what boarding passes you receive.
  3. Identify the applicable entry, baggage-drop and check-in deadlines.
  4. Add the terminal or airport transfer and a realistic disruption margin.
  5. Confirm who pays for a replacement if the first flight is late.

Traveling with cabin baggage can remove a baggage-claim wait, but it does not remove entry requirements, security, the airport change or the next airline's cutoff. Likewise, being able to check in online does not mean you can arrive at the airport at the scheduled departure time.

Use a simple cost-and-time worksheet

Compare two complete options in the same currency: airfare with bags, arrival transfer, any extra hotel night and departure transfer. Then add usable time at the destination. A saving that requires a night of poor sleep, another airport ride and a missed sightseeing morning may not suit your priorities.

For example, if one flight saves an assumed €40 but adds an assumed €25 transfer difference and a €60 overnight room, it is €45 more expensive before meals. These are hypothetical numbers to show the method, not Istanbul fares. Replace them with quotes for your party and remember that a vehicle price may be shared.

Keep the decision reversible until the main itinerary is stable. A flexible hotel can be helpful while choosing between airports, but check the exact cancellation deadline. Once booked, send the correct airport code to the hotel and driver and retain an offline copy of both confirmations.

BEFORE YOU GO

Common questions

Are IST and SAW two terminals of the same airport?

No. They are separate airports. A change between them requires a landside journey and a new check of baggage, entry and departure procedures.

Which airport is better for Sultanahmet?

Compare the flight time and the complete transfer to your hotel. Both require more planning than a city-center station arrival. A cheaper airfare alone does not decide which journey is better.

How many hours do I need between different Istanbul airports?

There is no guaranteed universal minimum for a self-arranged connection. Include arrival formalities, bags, the cross-city journey and the next airline's cutoff. Prefer the same airport or an overnight buffer when missing the flight would be costly.
