Day Trips From Istanbul: Princes’ Islands, Bursa or Staying in the City

Choose a realistic Istanbul day trip by comparing Princes' Islands ferries, the 2026 BUDO port change, Bursa transfers and a weather-safe city alternative.

A day trip begins at your hotel and ends when you get back, not when the ferry reaches its first destination. Istanbul's scale, different piers and onward transfers make that distinction important. A seemingly short crossing can occupy much of the day once both directions are included.

We checked the municipal ferry timetable, island transport and BUDO's current information on 16 October 2026. The sample plans below are editorial suggestions. They do not guarantee a particular sailing, connection, attraction opening or weather window on your travel date.

Choose the trip by what you want to do on arrival

OptionBest fitMain time costChoose another plan when
Büyükada or another Princes' IslandA waterfront day, walking and a slower lunchFerry stops plus the journey to and from the pierYou need a guaranteed return for a flight
Bursa via MudanyaA focused historic-city visitSea crossing plus onward land transport in both directionsYou want several distant Bursa attractions in a short day
Another Istanbul districtA flexible cultural or food-focused dayUrban transport and local walkingYour main goal is specifically to leave the city

For a first visit with three full days, our recommendation is usually to give those days to Istanbul. With a longer stay, an island day offers a clear change of pace. Bursa is more compelling when you particularly want its historic centre and can devote a long day to it, rather than simply looking for the nearest excursion label.

Keep travel companions' needs in the comparison. Someone who enjoys a long ferry ride may consider the journey part of the attraction; someone prone to seasickness may not. A scenic island walk can involve slopes, and a city day can require considerable standing. Choose the outing for the whole party's day, not just its headline photograph.

Read the Princes' Islands timetable from the right pier

On the municipal Adalar Lines timetable checked for this guide, a weekday/Saturday example leaves Kabataş at 09:00, calls at Kadıköy at 09:25 and reaches Büyükada at 10:45 after other island stops. That is a scheduled 1 hour 45 minutes from Kabataş, not a universal crossing time. Sunday/holiday schedules and different services need their own check. [1]

Start with the pier nearest your accommodation that has a useful service for your chosen island. Do not add a cross-city journey to reach a departure you saw in a blog if another listed pier works better. Then read the return table separately, making sure the boat serves the Istanbul pier you actually want.

Save two workable return options and identify when you need to leave the farthest point of your walk. A later ferry on paper does not mean you should aim to reach the queue at its departure minute. Check the operator's notices again before leaving the hotel, especially when wind or rough seas could affect the service.

Spend the island day on one island

For a first day, choose one island rather than hopping between several. On Büyükada, use the waterfront as your arrival and orientation area, then decide how far inland you want to walk. A long uphill excursion should be a deliberate activity with enough return time, not something added after a late lunch because it looks close on the map.

IETT's current island information lists electric public-transport routes, including BA1 on Büyükada between Çarşı, Tepeköy and Kadıyoran, with other routes serving different parts of the island. Use the current route and timetable for your stop. Older accounts of horse-drawn carriage sightseeing are not a reliable transport plan. [2]

Part of the dayA manageable plan
ArrivalOrient yourself at the pier and confirm the return boarding area
Late morningOne walk or an outing using the relevant island bus
LunchA meal with enough time to rest instead of immediately changing islands
AfternoonA shorter waterfront or neighborhood walk near the return route
ReturnReach the pier with a margin and use an earlier workable sailing

Take water and clothing suitable for the boat as well as the walk. If you plan to use a beach facility, verify its access, season and charges separately; a ferry ticket does not establish beach admission. For visitors who prefer a shorter walking day, keep the plan near the waterfront and let the sea journey provide the change of scenery.

Use BUDO's current Kabataş departure, then plan beyond Mudanya

BUDO moved from Eminönü/Sirkeci to Kabataş Transfer Centre, Block D, on 1 January 2026. Its published crossing to Mudanya takes 1 hour 50 minutes and carries passengers, not cars. Check your current booking rather than following an old pier location. [3]

Mudanya is the sea arrival point, not Bursa's historic centre. BUDO says it does not provide its own shuttle and identifies local bus connections at the port. Work out the actual onward route, transfers and return journey before buying a sightseeing schedule that assumes you step off the ferry beside the main monuments. [3]

For the day itself, select one central cluster around the Grand Mosque, bazaars and Koza Han, which Bursa's official tourism guide presents as part of the city's historic commercial and religious landscape. Allow time for a meal and the return to Mudanya. This gives the destination enough attention to justify the journey. [5]

Compare the full cost of independent and organized trips

For an independent island day, add hotel-to-pier transport, both ferry journeys, island transport if needed, meals and any paid attraction or beach entry. For Bursa, add the land journey between Mudanya and your chosen sights in both directions. A ferry-only price is not a total excursion budget.

For a packaged trip, identify the transport mode and departure point, the time spent at the destination and the included admissions. A 'Bursa tour' can follow a very different route from an independent historic-centre visit. Ask how shopping stops, lunch, guide language and any cable-car element fit into the advertised day.

  • Compare the final cost for the same number of travelers and the same essential activities.
  • Ask whether hotel pickup means your actual property or a meeting point in a wider district.
  • Check whether a meal is included and whether drinks or attraction tickets remain extra.
  • Confirm the expected return location and what happens if the itinerary changes.

A package can be worthwhile if it resolves several awkward transfers and includes the places you actually want. Independent travel can be better for a slow island lunch or a narrow Bursa history itinerary. Choose on those terms rather than assuming that either format is automatically cheaper or more authentic.

Keep an Istanbul alternative and understand cancellation

Check BUDO's live notices as well as the sailing search. Its published policy says a canceled outward sailing does not automatically cancel the return booking; contact the operator within the stated deadline for the return refund. Keep the two booking references together and handle both legs explicitly. [4] [3]

If the marine forecast makes the trip doubtful, use a flexible Istanbul day: a museum you have not visited, one neighborhood walk and a nearby meal. Choose the district according to current opening hours and your accommodation, with less time crossing the city. This also works when the group needs a slower day after several early starts.

Avoid an island or Bursa excursion on the day of an important flight unless you have an unusually large, deliberately assessed margin. Even a normally reliable timetable cannot guarantee sea conditions or the onward road journey. Keeping that day in Istanbul makes it easier to adapt to luggage, check-out and airport-transfer needs.

BEFORE YOU GO

Common questions

Can I visit Bursa from Istanbul in one day?

Yes, but plan a full day and include the land journey from Mudanya to Bursa's sights. A focused historic-centre itinerary is more realistic than combining the centre, mountain and several shopping stops. Check both ferry legs and the return transfer before booking.

Where does BUDO depart from Istanbul in 2026?

BUDO's current FAQ identifies Kabataş Transfer Centre, Block D, after the January 2026 move from Eminönü/Sirkeci. Follow the location on your current booking and check service notices before travel. [3]

Should I visit several Princes' Islands in one day?

For a relaxed first visit, choose one. Multiple islands add boarding, waiting and timetable constraints. A single island gives more room for a walk, lunch and a comfortable return margin.
