Getting medical help on a Türkiye holiday involves several different contacts: emergency dispatch, a clinic, a pharmacy and your insurance assistance team. Save these before you need them. A tour guide or hotel can help you communicate an address, but the healthcare professional decides the care route and your insurer decides the financial arrangements under your policy.

The information below was checked against official and provider sources on 13 October 2026. It covers illness or injury during travel, with practical questions for Istanbul, coastal stays and inland routes. Named organizations are examples of published procedures, not treatment recommendations or reports of personal experience. Elective medical travel needs a separate assessment with your own clinician.

Call 112 and communicate the place you actually occupy

The support line is described by a Ministry of Health facility; these contacts are not interchangeable. [2]

Keep the address in Turkish, including the district and building name. In a large hotel, add the room or meeting point; in a rural setting, add the road or recognizable access point and map location. If you are accompanying the patient, answer the dispatcher's questions directly and keep the line available for a callback. Do not choose a distant private hospital because it appeared first in a search.

Before a remote outing, tell the operator about communication needs and ask how it contacts emergency help from the route. Carrying insurance is separate from knowing where you are. A transfer itinerary or planned pickup point is not an adequate location if the incident occurs elsewhere.

Ask for language assistance and the correct department

A Ministry of Health facility describes the International Patient Support Line, 444 47 28, as providing round-the-clock interpretation and health consultation support in English and several other languages. It also describes teleconference referrals from 112 and the 184 SABIM service. This identifies a support channel; we have not test-called it or verified connection from every roaming plan. [2]

For a non-emergency appointment, ask a provider whether it can assess the patient's problem, age and relevant needs. Confirm the hospital branch, department and arrival instructions. A group may operate multiple hospitals with different services; a general international-patient enquiry does not settle which building you should attend.

Describe what you need in plain terms: a consultation today, a review of an existing condition or help obtaining a prescription. Ask what interpreter support is available at the specific appointment and whether it is included in the price. If the clinic cannot assist, ask for the appropriate alternative rather than spending time on an unsuitable visit.

When requesting care from a holiday base, identify the current town and accommodation, not just the nearest well-known city. For a stable, routine need, an accepted appointment nearer your base may reduce travel. For urgent uncertainty, contact emergency services or a qualified healthcare professional instead of making a tourism-based judgment about distance and convenience.

Separate access to care from the payment arrangement

FCDO states that EHIC and GHIC cards are not valid in Türkiye. A visitor should prepare the relevant travel-insurance documents and an accessible payment method rather than expecting those cards to settle a hospital bill. This does not determine the benefits of every other national arrangement or private policy. [1]

Acıbadem's published contracted-institution guidance says agreements can differ between hospitals and doctors and asks patients to check coverage with their insurer before an appointment. A listed insurance brand therefore does not establish direct billing for your policy, chosen clinician and visit. Obtain confirmation from both the assistance team and the facility. [3]

Before a routine visitAsk specificallyDo not infer
Hospital appointmentWhich consultation and tests are included in the estimate?A single quoted fee covers everything
Insurer authorizationIs this provider and episode approved?A logo on the hospital website secures payment
Deposit or patient shareWhat must I pay, in which currency and by which method?Travel insurance removes every upfront cost
Referral or admissionWho arranges the next facility and payment guarantee? The first approval covers every later service

Write down the insurance case number and the billing desk's contact. An estimate may change when a clinician decides more assessment is needed, so ask how additional charges will be explained. In an emergency, the priority remains contacting help; a companion can handle payment questions and inform the assistance team when practical.

Find a pharmacy using the current local duty service

In Turkish, eczane means pharmacy, and nöbetçi eczane identifies an on-duty pharmacy. Istanbul's pharmacy chamber publishes its duty-pharmacy service and described its official mobile application in a January 2026 announcement. Use the chamber's current service for the district and date, rather than a saved list from an earlier visit. [4]

The public duty-list page did not return a readable roster in our check, so this guide does not name a pharmacy as open tonight. Ask the clinic or accommodation to help access the official service, then telephone the selected pharmacy to confirm the hours and address before traveling. For another province, use that province's pharmacy chamber rather than extending the Istanbul list across the country.

FCDO states that British prescriptions are not accepted in Turkish pharmacies. It says a Turkish hospital and your home GP may sometimes help arrange a Turkish prescription for an equivalent medicine. This is a possible clinical route, not a guarantee of equivalence, availability or immediate dispensing. [1]

Show the active ingredient, strength, packaging and the directions from your prescriber. Ask the pharmacist whether a local prescription is necessary and how it can be obtained. For regular treatment, contact a clinician before the supply is exhausted. Do not rely on a similar brand name or change the dose to fit the package available in a shop.

Carry medicine records and check the exact import rules

The Ministry of Trade's customs FAQ says a reasonable quantity of medicine for personal treatment can be brought with a medical report or prescription. Its broader page includes older material on other customs topics; this guide uses the medicine statement only. It does not convert reasonable quantity into a universal number of packs or days. [5]

FCDO notes that some common medicines are controlled in Türkiye and directs travelers to the authorities or a Turkish embassy or consulate for the necessary documentation. Check the medicine's active ingredient, amount and route of administration well before departure. A prescription does not by itself answer every controlled-drug or transit-country requirement. [1]

  1. Ask your prescriber for a clear medicine list and the documentation needed for the trip.
  2. Send the authority an accurate enquiry about the exact medicine and quantity if the rule is unclear.
  3. Keep any required permission and identification with the labeled medicine; follow airline carriage rules separately.
  4. Make a plan for a delayed return or a refill with a clinician, rather than assuming you can buy the same product locally.

If your route includes another country, repeat the check for that border too. Keep documents accessible during the journey and save a contact for your prescriber. We have not obtained individual import permission or verified pharmacy stock; these checks belong to the specific medicine and traveler.

Collect records and plan a change to the journey

  • Ask for the consultation report, any test results and the prescription or discharge instructions.
  • Keep an itemized invoice, deposit receipts and evidence of each payment.
  • Record the clinic's contact, patient number and insurance case reference together.
  • Ask the treating clinician about follow-up and whether the planned travel should change.

If you are due to move from Istanbul to Cappadocia or leave a coastal resort the next morning, tell the clinician that timetable. Ask how results will be delivered and whether another consultation is needed before departure. Paying a bill does not mean every result has been reviewed or that you should resume the original itinerary.

For a hospital transfer, let the medical team and assistance service coordinate suitability and transport. A prebooked sightseeing driver is not automatically an appropriate medical transfer. For a flight, ask the airline about required medical documents after discussing fitness to travel with the clinician; do not treat an airline's acceptance as a medical assessment.

The Türkiye insurance guide covers how to evaluate benefits before purchase. Here, the immediate task is to identify the service, obtain care and retain an accurate record of the episode. A completed reimbursement application remains a request until the insurer assesses it against the policy.

BEFORE YOU GO

Common questions

What is Türkiye's ambulance number?

Dial 112 and ask for an ambulance. Give your actual location and follow the dispatcher's instructions. The International Patient Support Line serves a separate interpretation and consultation role. [1] [2]

How can I find an open pharmacy in Istanbul at night?

Use the Istanbul Pharmacy Chamber's current nöbetçi eczane service or official application. Confirm the district, date, address and hours. We have not verified tonight's individual roster or medicine stock. [4]

Can I use a GHIC or a British prescription in Türkiye?

FCDO says GHIC/EHIC cards are not valid in Türkiye and British prescriptions are not accepted in pharmacies. Arrange payment and, where needed, a local consultation for a Turkish prescription. [1]
