A workable money plan has three parts: a card that functions abroad, cash for the payments that cannot use it, and a clear record of what your bookings already include. Exchanging the entire holiday budget on arrival does not solve a hotel deposit, a failed card verification or an unexpectedly expensive currency conversion.
GoTürkiye identifies the Turkish lira as the national currency and notes that cards are widely accepted, while smaller or remote businesses may require cash. Treat that as a reason to diversify payment methods, not a promise that every café, taxi or ticket machine will accept your particular card. [1]
Which currency should you carry?
Use TRY, TL and the lira symbol as labels for the same currency when comparing everyday prices. A hotel or activity may advertise in euros, but that does not establish the currency in which your card will be charged. Ask for the final payable amount and currency before accepting a booking, especially when the balance is collected later.
| Payment | Practical approach | Check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Meals and small purchases | Keep some lira and a card available | Menu currency and the final bill |
| Hotel booked in euros | Save the booking's payment terms | Fixed euro charge or later lira conversion |
| ATM withdrawal | Request the amount you actually need | ATM fee, issuer fee and conversion offer |
| Tour balance | Confirm the accepted payment method | Currency, card surcharge if applicable and receipt |
Avoid building the trip around someone accepting foreign notes or having change. If you carry emergency foreign cash, keep it separate from daily spending and check exchange-office conditions. A quoted exchange rate is only meaningful after any commission and the direction of the exchange are clear.
Card conversion: read the screen before you tap yes
Dynamic currency conversion lets a merchant or ATM offer to charge you in your home currency. Visa says the offer must show the local and home-currency amounts, exchange rate and additional fees, and the choice belongs to the cardholder. You can decline the conversion and still make the transaction. [2]
Our practical default is to choose the local-currency transaction unless you have compared the offered conversion with your card's terms and prefer it. This is not a claim that every lira transaction is fee-free: your issuer may still charge a foreign-transaction fee. A reassuring home-currency total can simply make an expensive conversion easier to overlook.
For a purchase originally priced and contracted in euros, clarify the merchant's actual billing currency rather than mechanically pressing a lira option. Save the receipt and check that it matches the amount you approved. Resolve an incorrect currency or duplicate charge promptly with the merchant and your card issuer.
Plan ATM withdrawals around the route
Before leaving home, check cash-withdrawal limits, overseas fees, PIN requirements and how to unblock the card. Keep the issuer's contact details available without relying on access to your usual phone number. Carrying two cards is more useful when they are stored separately and you know the backup card's PIN.
- Estimate the next few days of cash-only spending and add a modest reserve.
- Read the ATM's fee and conversion screens before confirming; cancel if the terms are unclear.
- Record the withdrawal and put away the cash before walking away.
- Reassess before leaving a major town rather than withdrawing the whole trip budget at once.
An ATM operator's fee, your bank's withdrawal fee and currency-conversion costs are separate possibilities. We have not identified a universally free Turkish ATM for every foreign card. A larger withdrawal can reduce repeated fixed fees, but carrying more money also increases the amount you could lose. Choose an amount that balances both considerations.
Tipping and restaurant bills changed in 2026
The Ministry of Trade's 30 January 2026 notice prohibits restaurants, cafés and similar food businesses from demanding mandatory service, table or cover charges. Extra payments such as tips are voluntary; the notice also addresses unsolicited cover items. This replaces older advice that a mandatory service fee is acceptable merely because it appears on the menu. [3]
Ask whether a suggested starter or bottled drink is something you are ordering before accepting it. At payment, compare the itemized bill with the food and drinks requested. If an unexplained line appears, ask calmly what it covers and request a corrected bill where appropriate. Keep the menu and receipt if you need to raise the issue later.
There is no compulsory percentage to add as a tip. Decide according to the service and your budget, and make the amount intentional rather than letting a payment terminal decide it. Tips for a guide, driver or hotel porter are a separate choice; a restaurant rule should not be treated as the complete contract for a private tour.
Accommodation tax: use the date of your stay
The Revenue Administration confirms a temporary accommodation-tax rate of 1% from 1 May through 31 December 2026. The ordinary statutory rate is 2%, so an older guide or a future stay can require a different calculation. Do not extend the temporary reduction into 2027 without checking for a new decision. [4]
The official guide explains invoicing and the tax base, including separation from VAT. For a traveler, the useful question is whether the final room or package price already includes accommodation tax. Do not add another percentage to an all-inclusive quote automatically. Ask the hotel to identify any balance payable on arrival. [5]
Keep a booking ledger and a separate reserve
For each hotel, transfer and activity, write down the total, amount already paid, remaining balance, currency and due date. Add cancellation deadlines in the seller's local time. This prevents a deposit from being mistaken for the full price and stops the same breakfast or airport transfer from appearing twice in your budget.
Keep an emergency reserve outside the daily spending allowance. It should be available for a transport change or another night, rather than committed to optional shopping. Your own itinerary determines the amount: an Istanbul city stay and a trip involving domestic flights, a cave hotel and a weather-dependent balloon flight have different exposure to changes.
- Check the final bill before leaving each hotel.
- Keep refund confirmations until the money has returned.
- Reconcile card transactions without sharing card numbers or verification codes with tour sellers.
- Before departure, use remaining cash deliberately rather than buying unnecessary items to empty a wallet.
BEFORE YOU GO
Common questions
Can I use euros everywhere in Türkiye?
Do not rely on it. Some tourism businesses quote in euros, but everyday spending is in lira. Confirm the billing currency and any conversion before paying, and keep local cash for smaller purchases.
Is a restaurant service charge the same as a tip?
No. The January 2026 ministry notice prohibits mandatory service, table and cover charges at the covered food businesses. A tip is an optional payment you choose to make.
Should I add 1% to every hotel booking?
No. Check whether accommodation tax is already included and whether your stay falls within the temporary 2026 period. Ask for an itemized final total rather than calculating tax twice.
