A rental car can make an inland route or a sequence of smaller places easier. It can also become an expensive object to park during a Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik itinerary. Start by identifying the days when the car would solve a real transport problem.

This guide is a booking checklist, not a legal assessment of every foreign driving licence or an insurance recommendation. Requirements depend on the issuing country, licence format, driver and rental contract. Read the actual supplier's conditions before committing to a prepaid vehicle.

Which Croatia routes benefit from a car?

Trip patternStarting recommendationWhy
City stays linked by passenger ferriesCompare a car-free route firstParking and vehicle-ferry logistics may add little value
Inland parks and several smaller stopsCompare rental for those daysThe route may be hard to reproduce with public transport
One Split–Dubrovnik transferCompare coach or private transferAvoid a rental solely for one journey
Remote accommodationCheck the property's transport needsMeals, shops and activities may require repeated driving

A useful compromise is to collect after a city stay and return before the next one. Compare that with a weekly rental, including the cost and time of reaching the offices. A nominal weekly discount does not necessarily outweigh several days of parking and an inconvenient return.

Count the drivers as well as the passengers. A long sightseeing day followed by a substantial drive can be tiring for one person even when the group enjoys the route. Leave room for breaks and choose an overnight stop when the day becomes mostly driving.

Check the licence and the rental contract separately

Croatia's Ministry of the Interior says a foreign visitor may drive with a valid foreign licence subject to reciprocity, without an international driving permit under those conditions. That wording should not be expanded into a promise that every licence format is accepted by every rental desk. [1]

Tell the supplier the issuing country, licence type, how long you have held it and your age. Ask whether an international driving permit or translation is required alongside the original. An international permit is not a replacement for the underlying licence; bring the documents the supplier confirms it needs.

Check whether every driver must be named and present at collection, and whether an additional-driver charge applies. A friend who can legally drive may still be outside the rental contract. Resolve that before leaving the desk rather than after the main driver becomes tired.

Match the reservation name to the required payment card and confirm the accepted card type. A booking platform accepting a debit-card payment online does not establish that the local supplier will accept the same card for the security deposit.

Compare the real payable cost

Cost or conditionWhat to establish
Base rentalDates, collection/return hours and included mileage
DepositAmount, accepted card and release process
Damage liabilityExcess, exclusions and claims procedure
Route chargesOne-way return, ferry permission and border permissions
Daily running costsFuel, parking and applicable tolls
ExtrasChild seats, additional driver and out-of-hours service

A deposit is money or card capacity held as security; an excess is an amount you may remain responsible for under the relevant damage terms. They are not interchangeable. A separate reimbursement policy may also leave you paying the supplier first and claiming later, so understand the process rather than just the headline coverage amount.

Ask about exclusions involving tyres, glass, underbody, keys or unauthorized roads where relevant to the proposed contract. Do not assume a product called full cover removes every obligation. Keep the policy wording and supplier agreement together so you know which company handles which problem.

Localrent's Croatia listings are one place to compare vehicles and conditions, but terms belong to the selected offer and supplier. We have not checked availability for your dates or established one universally best rental company. Use the same checklist when comparing any other provider. [2]

Ferries and borders need explicit permission

Before taking a rental onto a ferry, ask the supplier whether it is permitted and whether any fee, document or insurance condition applies. Localrent's Zadar guidance specifically tells customers to coordinate ferry use in advance and notes that cross-border options vary. That is a reason to check, not a universal rule for all rentals. [3]

Then verify that the boat carries vehicles and serves the useful port. A passenger catamaran to Hvar Town is not interchangeable with a vehicle ferry to Stari Grad. A car reservation may depend on dimensions or vehicle category, so provide accurate details and check boarding requirements.

For a border excursion, distinguish immigration documents, the right to drive and the supplier's permission. Satisfying one does not automatically satisfy the others. If your route is entirely within Croatia via Pelješac Bridge, avoid adding a cross-border package simply because an outdated itinerary assumed Neum was unavoidable. [4]

Keep written permission with the agreement when the supplier provides it. If plans change during the trip, ask before driving onto a different ferry or into another country. Do not rely on a verbal claim from a third-party seller that every destination is covered.

Tolls, city parking and navigation

Hrvatske autoceste calculates tolls by motorway section and vehicle category and provides cash, card and electronic-toll payment options. Check the official calculator for your route instead of budgeting from a single nationwide road-charge figure. Use the lane appropriate to your payment method and rental equipment. [5]

Ask whether the rental contains an electronic toll device, whether using it triggers a service fee and how charges are settled. Do not assume equipment mounted in the vehicle is free to use. Keep receipts when paying yourself so a later invoice can be checked against the actual journey.

In historic cities, establish parking and the permitted approach with the accommodation before arrival. A central room may be reached on foot from an outside drop-off, and a navigation app's destination pin does not grant vehicle access. Include the walk with bags when comparing hotels.

Read HAK's current road information before a substantial drive, especially when weather or works could affect the route. A saved navigation estimate cannot account for every closure or restriction. For seasonal equipment or a specific road rule, consult the current official requirements for your travel dates. [6]

Collect and return the car methodically

  1. Inspect the exterior, wheels, glass and interior with the supplier and record existing damage.
  2. Photograph the agreed condition, fuel or charge level and mileage before departure.
  3. Confirm the breakdown and accident reporting process, including whom to contact first.
  4. Return with the agreed fuel level and obtain a dated handover record or follow the documented after-hours procedure.

Allow time at collection to adjust the seat, mirrors and controls before entering unfamiliar traffic. Check that the luggage fits without leaving valuables visibly exposed. If the supplied vehicle differs materially from the reservation, clarify the category and charges while the desk can still resolve it.

For a flight departure, leave enough time for refueling, finding the return entrance, inspection and the terminal transfer. Returning a car is not a zero-minute task. Keep the final receipt and deposit-release information until the account is settled, and query unexpected charges with the supporting photographs and agreement.

BEFORE YOU GO

Common questions

Do I need a car for Split and Dubrovnik?

Not automatically. If most of your time is in the cities and the main journey is between them, compare buses, passenger boats and transfers first. Rent for specific countryside days when it adds useful access.

Does a prepaid rental include the deposit?

Usually the security arrangement is a separate contract detail. Confirm the amount and accepted card with the actual supplier. Paying online does not prove that you meet the collection requirements.

Can I put any rental car on a ferry?

Get the supplier's permission and conditions first, then book a vehicle-carrying service with accurate vehicle details. Passenger catamarans and vehicle ferries are different products.
