The best Split–Dubrovnik connection is the one that fits both ends of your day. A ferry can remove road time but introduce a seasonal timetable and sea conditions; a coach may cost less but still leave a local transfer from Dubrovnik's bus station. Compare door to door, not just one headline duration.

A rental car is a separate decision from the choice to travel by road. If you only need to move between two city hotels, paying for a vehicle, one-way return and parking may be unnecessary. If you want a wider mainland route, the same vehicle can become useful.

Choose by the job the journey needs to do

Start by deciding whether the travel day is simply a transfer or part of the sightseeing plan. A direct coach and a driver stopping for a long lunch are not competing on the same service. Put the intended stops in writing before comparing prices or durations.

If you have an international flight or another fixed departure later that day, assess the consequence of a delay. An overnight in the departure city is often a more useful safeguard than choosing the mode with the shortest advertised travel time.

Passenger ferry: a seasonal coast-to-coast option

TP Line's 2026 schedules illustrate the choice: line 842 operates from 1 April to 31 October, and line 654 from 8 May to 18 October. Their Split–Dubrovnik journeys are scheduled at about five hours, with intermediate island stops. Check the selected date and direction; these two services do not define every operator's season. [1] [2]

A through ticket does not usually mean a sightseeing stop where you can leave the boat and rejoin later at will. If you want an overnight on Hvar or Korčula, plan separate legs and accommodation. Treat the island call during a through journey as part of the transport schedule unless the booking explicitly offers something else.

Check baggage allowance, boarding instructions and the port shown on the ticket. Keep essentials with you even when a larger bag is stored elsewhere. If motion on boats is a concern, think about your own comfort before choosing several hours at sea solely for the view.

For Dubrovnik, plan the onward journey from Gruž to the hotel. Do not write Old Town as the arrival point on your itinerary if the ticket uses the main port. The final transfer, including any uphill walk, can determine whether a late ferry arrival is convenient.

Coach: compare the actual departure and luggage terms

Arriva's route page connects Split's main bus station at Obala kneza Domagoja with Dubrovnik's main bus station in Gruž. It describes a journey of roughly four and a half hours, while individual departures can differ. Use the dated search result for the service you are buying. [3]

Compare the full payable fare, baggage charges if any, change conditions and the departure time. A low promotional fare on a different day is not the price of your journey. Check whether a booking is direct or includes a change, especially when using a platform listing several operators.

Arrive with the ticket accessible and allow time to find the correct platform and load luggage. Label bags and keep passports, medication and valuables with you. Do not schedule a paid attraction immediately after the bus's theoretical arrival; ordinary traffic can use up that small margin.

If you need accessible boarding or a particular child-seat arrangement, ask the operator about the actual service before payment. A general website description does not guarantee that every vehicle or departure has the same facilities.

Driving: use the modern road route and check its conditions

The Croatian transport ministry records the opening of Pelješac Bridge in July 2022, connecting the southern part of the country with the rest of Croatia. A route using the bridge avoids the old assumption that every Split–Dubrovnik road trip must cross Bosnia and Herzegovina at Neum. [4]

Choose the intended route in navigation and check current road conditions with HAK. Do not assume every coach or private driver follows the same route; ask when a border crossing would affect your documents or schedule. If you deliberately enter another country, verify its entry and rental-car conditions separately. [5]

For a rental, compare collection and return locations before paying. Returning in Dubrovnik can involve a one-way fee, a particular office or an airport journey. A car is less useful if you pay to keep it parked for several days after reaching the city.

Plan breaks and parking before a sightseeing stop. Leaving all luggage in the car while exploring a town is different from stopping briefly for fuel. Keep valuables with you and consider whether the proposed stop has a practical place to park without entering a restricted or pedestrian area.

Private transfer: specify the stops and service

  1. Send the exact Split pickup and Dubrovnik destination addresses.
  2. State passengers, bags, child seats and any mobility requirements.
  3. Request an all-in quote with waiting, stops and cancellation conditions.
  4. Confirm the final accessible drop-off and the contact procedure on the day.

For a group, divide the total vehicle quote by the number of passengers only after confirming the vehicle size. Four adults with large suitcases may need a different vehicle from four adults with small daypacks. A cheap quote that cannot carry the luggage is not a usable option.

Ask whether a stop is a short rest break or an agreed sightseeing allowance. An open-ended meal can change the price and arrival time. If your Dubrovnik accommodation needs a timed key handover, tell the host the realistic arrival window rather than the navigation app's fastest estimate.

A driver may be able to arrange a convenient roadside pickup, but cannot necessarily reach an Old Town room. Agree where the vehicle journey ends and who handles the remaining luggage walk. This avoids an argument at the end of an otherwise successful transfer.

If a ferry is canceled, a coach may be a possible alternative, but it is not automatically available or covered by the ferry ticket. Check seats and departure locations before abandoning the original arrangement. Keep the cancellation notice and ask the seller about the refund or rebooking attached to your purchase.

When the next day is flexible, choose the mode you will enjoy. When the same afternoon contains an expensive fixed commitment, change the timing first. No comparison table can turn a fragile separate-ticket connection into a protected one.

BEFORE YOU GO

Common questions

Can I take a car on the Split–Dubrovnik catamaran?

The passenger services discussed here are not a way to transport your rental car between the cities. Choose a suitable road route or separately verified vehicle-ferry itinerary if you have a car.

Do I have to cross Bosnia and Herzegovina?

A road route via Pelješac Bridge avoids that crossing. Confirm the route of your particular coach or transfer, and check separate entry and rental conditions if you choose a route through another country.

Is the ferry faster than the bus?

Not automatically. The cited ferry schedules are around five hours and the coach operator's indicative journey is around four and a half, before local connections. Compare the actual dated services and your hotel locations.
