Croatia Island Hopping: A 7-Night Route Without the Rush
Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik in seven nights, with a ten-night extension. Plan ports and dated ferries before hotels, and keep a buffer before flying.

Island hopping loses its appeal when every morning starts with packing for another ferry. This seven-night Croatia route uses Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik as three bases, with a ten-night extension when the sailings fit. Set the ports and dates first, then give each stop enough nights to feel like a stay.
The examples below are editorial plans for independent travelers, not packages or promises of available seats. Their purpose is to leave enough time for the islands themselves. One transfer every morning produces a collection of ferry journeys rather than a relaxed coastal holiday.
Start with the season and the direction
Check a complete chain of sailings in one direction before choosing hotels. For example, TP Line's 2026 line 842 runs from 1 April to 31 October, while line 654 runs from 8 May to 18 October. Both connect Split, Hvar, Korčula and Dubrovnik, but their dates and departure times differ. These are examples from two services, not the operating season of every Croatian ferry. [1] [2]
An early-spring or late-autumn plan may need a return to Split instead of an onward coastal catamaran. That can still be a good trip, but it changes where you sleep and how much ground transport you need. Never apply a July screenshot to an October departure without opening the current operator schedule.
Choose north-to-south or south-to-north according to your flights and the useful departure times. A slightly dearer flight into one airport and out of another may remove an entire return journey. Compare the whole route cost before deciding that a return flight to the same city is cheaper.
A seven-night route with three bases
| Nights | Base | Use the time for |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Split | Arrival recovery and a full day in the historic center |
| 3–5 | Hvar | Two full island days without moving accommodation |
| 6–7 | Dubrovnik | A city day and a mainland buffer before departure |
On day three, transfer to Hvar after breakfast or according to the actual sailing. Treat the remainder of that day as settling-in time: find your accommodation, buy water and learn the route back to the harbor. Save a booked island excursion for a full day when arrival delays cannot interfere.
Use one Hvar day for the town and nearby coast and another for a different part of the island or a boat outing that suits the conditions. On day six, continue to Dubrovnik if your dated route operates. Keep day seven for the walls, museums or an unhurried walk, rather than adding another long-distance excursion.
This plan gives Split one full day, Hvar two and Dubrovnik one. If your priority is Dubrovnik's history rather than island time, move a Hvar night to Dubrovnik. If your flight lands late, the first Split night is simply an arrival night; do not count it as a sightseeing day.
How to extend to ten nights without overloading it
A useful ten-night version is Split two nights, Hvar three, Korčula two and Dubrovnik three. The extra island stop creates another hotel change, so give it two nights instead of trying to see it during a hurried connection. You then retain two full days in Dubrovnik and an easier departure.
Compare the time of the Hvar–Korčula arrival with your accommodation's check-in arrangements, and the Korčula–Dubrovnik departure with any luggage-storage plan. Do not assume you can leave a suitcase at a private apartment after checkout. Get that agreement before building a final sightseeing morning around it.
For families or travelers who dislike packing, another good ten-night choice is simply two nights in Split, four on Hvar and four in Dubrovnik. More nights do not require more ports. Day outings can be chosen after seeing the weather, and a slower trip makes it easier to recover from one disrupted sailing.
Choose ports before choosing a hotel
The Hvar tourist board distinguishes connections to Hvar Town, Stari Grad, Jelsa and Sućuraj. Jadrolinija's Split–Stari Grad line 635 is a year-round vehicle-ferry route; it is different from a passenger catamaran to Hvar Town. [3] [4]
| Ticket says | Planning consequence | Check with the host |
|---|---|---|
| Hvar | Likely a Hvar Town arrival on the selected passenger service | Walking route and stairs from that berth |
| Stari Grad | Separate terminal and onward island journey | Bus or transfer for your sailing |
| Jelsa | A different town and timetable | Connection to your actual accommodation |
| Dubrovnik / Gruž | Port arrival outside the Old Town | Local bus or vehicle transfer to the hotel |
A waterfront room can still be inconvenient if the boat arrives in another town. Price the last leg before accepting a cheaper hotel. With heavy luggage, an uphill walk or several staircases may matter more than a small difference in room rate.

Do you need a rental car?
For this specific Split–Hvar–Dubrovnik route, start by planning without one. Passenger boats and central accommodation avoid paying for a parked car during town days. If you want several remote beaches or inland villages, compare a local rental day with keeping a vehicle for the entire holiday.
A vehicle changes the route: the useful passenger catamaran may not carry cars, and the vehicle ferry may use a different port. Check the rental agreement's ferry permission, the car's dimensions for booking and any one-way return fee. A map showing a boat connection does not establish that your rental can use it.
- Compare room prices including parking when driving.
- Keep valuables out of an unattended vehicle during sightseeing.
- Do not book a mainland rental return for the same minute as a ferry's scheduled arrival.
- Agree who pays for an extra rental day if the itinerary changes.
Book the fragile connections first
- Confirm flights, usable ferry dates and the exact ports in one route worksheet.
- Reserve accommodation with cancellation terms appropriate to the route's uncertainty.
- Book the limited transport legs, checking passenger names, luggage and boarding instructions.
- Leave the last night before a flight on the mainland and read operator notices before each crossing.
A sensible buffer is measured by the consequence of missing the next booking. A flexible dinner can move; an international flight usually cannot. An overnight mainland buffer does not eliminate disruption, but it gives you more recovery options than stepping off the first island boat and rushing directly to the airport.
If a sailing is canceled, first establish whether the operator can move you to another departure and whether that departure uses the same port. Contact the next accommodation promptly. Keep tickets, cancellation messages and replacement receipts together; a ferry refund and reimbursement for another hotel are different questions under the relevant contracts.
BEFORE YOU GO
Common questions
Can I island-hop outside summer?
Yes, but build the trip from the dated timetable. Some links are seasonal and a return through Split may replace a direct onward connection. Year-round access to an island does not mean every coastal route runs all year.
Is one night on each island enough?
It can work for a specific purpose, but repeated checkouts and ferry waits consume much of the day. Two or three nights in fewer places usually gives a first-time traveler more usable island time.
Should I book a ferry on my flight home day?
Our recommendation is to return to the mainland the previous day. If you choose a same-day connection, understand the separate-ticket risk and have a realistic alternative that does not depend on another unconfirmed boat.
