Searching for a hotel on Hvar produces properties across an entire island. A room can be excellent and still be the wrong base for your arrival time, restaurant plans or onward ferry. Start with the journey you will repeat most often, then choose the area that makes that journey easy.

This is a comparison of locations, not a ranking of hotels we have stayed in. We have not verified live room availability or a universal nightly price range. Quotes, stairs, parking and collection arrangements should be checked for the individual property.

Compare three bases by their practical role

Location choices, not guarantees about every accommodation in an area.

Hvar TownYour activities and passenger ferry use this harborUphill streets, noise and luggage access
Stari GradYou prefer a stay around this town or use the vehicle ferryTerminal-to-accommodation transfer
JelsaYou want to spend time in Jelsa and nearby placesDated boat timetable and onward island transport

For a short stay, proximity to the things you actually want to do usually matters more than squeezing in several towns. A three-night booking gives two full days. Spending both of them crossing the island because the room was cheaper can undo the saving in transport cost and effort.

For a longer stay, a quieter or more remote property can work well if you have a reliable transport plan. Check how you will get dinner after returning from an excursion, not only how you will reach the hotel on the first afternoon.

Hvar Town: convenient for a harbor-based visit

Choose Hvar Town when you want to organize most days around the town, its harbor and activities departing nearby. Some coastal passenger services connect it with Split, Korčula and Dubrovnik in their operating season. Check the exact route rather than assuming every boat labeled Hvar arrives here. [1]

Within the town, decide whether you value a short harbor walk or a more removed setting. Ask a host for the walking route from the actual arrival berth with luggage. An attractive sea view may come with climbing, while a central room may face evening activity. Neither trade-off is inherently bad if it matches your priorities.

For an early departure, a practical breakfast and key-return arrangement may matter more than a balcony. Ask where you can leave a bag after checkout if your boat leaves later. Save the answer in writing, especially for apartments without a continuously staffed reception.

A town base does not automatically provide easy access to every beach. Identify the particular stretch of coast you want and check the walk or transfer. Use property descriptions such as beachfront or near the sea as prompts for questions, not a complete description of swimming access.

Stari Grad: separate the town from the ferry terminal

Jadrolinija's Split–Stari Grad vehicle ferry operates year-round, with reservations tied to the selected departure on line 635. That can make this side of the island useful for a car-based route. The ferry terminal is a separate arrival point from a room in town. [2]

Before booking, ask how you will get from the terminal to the property at the actual arrival hour. A transfer described as available may need advance notice or a separate payment. Do not assume a host will be waiting simply because you have supplied an estimated check-in time.

Stari Grad can also suit travelers without a car if their preferred activities and meals are nearby and the arrival transfer is organized. Compare one paid transfer with the cost of carrying a rental car throughout the stay. You may not need a vehicle every day simply because you arrived on a vehicle ferry as a foot passenger.

If you plan evenings in Hvar Town on most nights, consider staying there instead. A cheaper room in another town does not remove the need to get home after dinner. Check the last practical transport option before relying on spontaneous late-night journeys.

Jelsa and smaller bases: let the timetable shape the stay

Jadrolinija publishes passenger services involving Jelsa, Bol, Split and Stari Grad. Read the date, direction and individual sailing carefully: a morning departure from the island and evening departure from Split do not create a convenient Split-based Jelsa day trip. [3]

For a Jelsa stay, that timetable may be entirely suitable. Build the first and last nights around it, then check connections to the accommodation. If your flight arrival makes the direct boat impractical, compare a later Stari Grad arrival plus road transfer with a mainland overnight.

A smaller village or bay needs a more complete checklist. Ask about groceries, meal service, road access, parking and the distance to the place where an excursion actually collects passengers. A secluded apartment is much less convenient when every breakfast and dinner requires transport you have not arranged.

Avoid splitting a short island stay between two properties just to sample different settings. The checkout, luggage transfer and second check-in can take away the afternoon you hoped to spend exploring. For a longer stay, a town-and-coast split can make sense once both transfers are clear.

Read the room details as carefully as the map

  1. Ask for the number of steps and whether the room is on an upper floor without a lift.
  2. Confirm air conditioning, bed configuration and any restrictions that matter to your party.
  3. Identify the nearest permitted vehicle drop-off or the walk from your boat.
  4. Get parking, luggage storage and late-arrival arrangements in writing.

Compare the final payable total for the same number of people and nights. Check cleaning charges, taxes shown separately, breakfast, parking and cancellation terms. A low nightly headline can be misleading when a short apartment stay carries a substantial fixed cleaning charge.

For noise-sensitive travelers, ask which direction the actual room faces and whether windows overlook a bar, restaurant or busy passage. An accommodation name does not identify the room you will receive. Likewise, a photograph of one terrace does not establish that every room has private outdoor space.

Match the accommodation to a workable departure

Hvar's tourist board lists several island ports and mainland connections. Use that network to test your route before paying for a nonrefundable stay. A different port can rescue an itinerary, but it can also add an unbudgeted road journey. [4]

For a flight home, our preference is a mainland night beforehand. If you choose to remain on the island, work through what happens if the selected boat is canceled, delayed or moved. The existence of another scheduled service does not prove that it has seats or that you can reach its port in time.

Finally, make sure the destination name on the hotel reservation matches the place you intended. Keep the address available offline. Searching for a property by name after landing at a different island port is an avoidable way to begin the stay.

BEFORE YOU GO

Common questions

Is Hvar Town the same as Hvar island?

No. Hvar Town is one town on the island. Stari Grad, Jelsa and other places have different arrival points and transport needs. Read the accommodation address and ferry destination together.

Can I stay on Hvar without renting a car?

Yes, when your base, activities and arrival transfer work without one. A town-centered stay is easier to organize this way than a remote accommodation with meals and excursions in different places.

Is staying near the Stari Grad ferry automatically convenient?

It depends on the exact property and your plans. The terminal, town and Hvar Town are different places. Check the last leg and daily journeys instead of relying on the ferry-port label.
