A ferry ticket to Hvar can leave you at a different port from the one you expected. Choose Hvar Town or Stari Grad around your hotel and whether you are taking a car, then compare the full arrival cost. Getting that decision right matters more than the cheapest fare in a search result.
Next decide whether the car needs to cross at all. A foot-passenger journey and a vehicle journey should be compared from the Split starting point to the actual hotel, including parking and island transport.
Choose the town before the sailing
| Plan | Search first | Include afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Hvar Town stay, no car | Passenger boats to Hvar Town | Port-to-hotel walk or transfer |
| Stari Grad stay | Services to the relevant Stari Grad arrival | Distance from ferry port to the accommodation |
| Car-based island trip | Vehicle ferry to Stari Grad | Island drive, parking and rental permission |
| Short outing from Split | A workable return on the same date | Useful island time between the journeys |
Keep the full town and port names on the hotel and transport notes. An island search result does not establish that the boat reaches the accommodation district.
Passenger boats to Hvar Town
Check Krilo, TP Line and Jadrolinija for the passenger routes they actually offer on your date. Compare departure, arrival port, return options and the ticket conditions at the same time, rather than choosing a morning outbound before looking at the evening return. [3] [4] [2]
A direct town arrival can reduce the final road leg, but accommodation on a hill or outside the town still needs an access check. Ask the hotel about the entrance route and luggage rather than assuming a harbor-side arrival means a flat walk.
Vehicle ferry to Stari Grad
The Split–Stari Grad route is the relevant Jadrolinija vehicle-ferry option to compare, and the current FAQ includes it among local lines with reservations. Select the vehicle and passenger details required for that ticket. [1]
Add the journey from Stari Grad ferry port to your base. If the hotel is in Hvar Town, it is not the same destination as the ferry arrival. Check parking and rental permission before paying to carry a car that will spend most of the stay unused.
Calculate the whole-party cost
- Passenger fares for every traveler in the applicable categories.
- The vehicle fare where a car must cross.
- Road transfer or island transport to the hotel.
- Parking, permitted ferry use and any rental extras.
- The return or onward connection after the island stay.
For a short Hvar Town visit, leaving the car on the mainland may simplify the journey. For a wider island route, the car can have a different value. This is an itinerary decision; a lower boat fare alone does not establish the lower full-trip cost.
Landing at Split Airport and continuing the same day
Work backward from a usable sailing and its boarding deadline. Include baggage, airport-to-port transport and time to find the right departure point. The landing time is not the port-arrival time.

If the final departure leaves little margin, reserve a changeable Split night or choose a next-day sailing. A missed connection can also affect the island hotel, so read that cancellation condition before assuming a ferry change solves everything. Keep a contact for both the boat seller and the accommodation.
An island arrival that still works if plans change
- Choose the Hvar town and exact hotel.
- Confirm whether the party travels with a car.
- Check a dated operator timetable and full arrival port.
- Arrange the island last mile and save the ticket.
- Check traffic notices and keep a Split fallback.
For an onward flight, consider returning to the mainland before the final day. One less island evening can be worthwhile when it avoids tying the flight to a weather-sensitive crossing. That buffer reduces dependence on the boat, but does not guarantee every other connection.
Choose between three realistic Hvar trips
| Trip | Likely starting choice | What to arrange |
|---|---|---|
| Two nights in Hvar Town with small bags | A dated passenger boat to Hvar Town | The walk or pickup from that waterfront |
| Several nights exploring multiple island locations by car | The Split–Stari Grad vehicle route | Vehicle permission, island driving and hotel parking |
| A day trip from Split | A return pair that leaves enough time ashore | The last usable return and a plan if it changes |
A Hvar Town day trip should not be evaluated by the early outbound alone. Write the return boarding deadline first, then subtract the time needed to return from the furthest planned activity. If the resulting visit is too short, simplify the activity list or choose an overnight. Do not add a distant beach transfer just because the boat itself is fast.
A Stari Grad arrival can be entirely sensible for a foot passenger when the onward transfer is arranged, but it is a different door-to-door product. Compare its complete cost and arrival time with a town-bound sailing. Avoid relying on a transfer inferred from an old blog; ask the accommodation or current transport provider for a dated answer.
Make the airport and island bookings survive a delay
For an afternoon flight into Split, begin with the last suitable sailing and work backward through boarding, road transfer, baggage and the airport exit. Then add a realistic margin rather than treating the scheduled landing as a guaranteed release time. If the sequence is fragile, spending the first night in Split gives a clearer start to the island stay.
Tell the Hvar accommodation how you are arriving and ask what happens if the sailing is canceled. The ferry seller and hotel are separate contracts. A refundable boat does not automatically make a prepaid room refundable, and a hotel agreeing to a late check-in does not solve the island transfer.
- Save both the operator's ticket and the accommodation's arrival instructions.
- Record the exact Hvar arrival port and a contact for the last mile.
- Check the operator's current notice before leaving Split.
- If the departure changes, confirm the full replacement route before canceling a workable alternative.
- Return to the mainland with enough margin for the onward commitment.
If a passenger service is unavailable, do not assume a car ferry from another port is automatically the fastest recovery. Count the road journey on both sides and confirm actual space. For a family, compare keeping everyone together with splitting the party to recover a car later; the cheaper fare may produce a much more complicated day.
BEFORE YOU GO
Common questions
Is Stari Grad the same port as Hvar Town?
No. Treat them as separate arrivals and include the island transfer if your hotel is in the other town.
Should I take my rental car?
Compare the whole island plan, parking, ferry fare and the rental company’s permission. A short town-focused stay may not need the car.
Can I reach Hvar on the day my flight lands?
Only choose that plan after checking a dated sailing, the airport-to-port journey and boarding deadline. Keep an overnight alternative when the margin is small.
