Croatia Ferries: What to Check Before You Book
Car ferry or passenger catamaran? Check the exact ports, date, vehicle rules and what your ticket reserves before locking in island hotels.

Book the wrong Croatian ferry and the problem may be the port, the vehicle rules or what the ticket actually reserves. Start with the exact route and date, then compare the service you need for your people, car and bags. This checklist helps you connect the sailing to the hotel stay that follows it.
Build the booking around what must travel: people, a car, bags, bicycles or pets. Then confirm the service offered on the actual date, followed by the route from the arrival port to the accommodation.
Identify operator, ports and vessel type
Use the operator’s own date search and match the port name to a map. Write the full origin and destination beside the island name so a similarly named place cannot slip into the booking. Check who operates the sailing when purchasing through an intermediary. [2] [3] [4]
Jadrolinija distinguishes vehicle ferries from its passenger-only ship and high-speed services. Do not assume a fast passenger sailing accepts a rental car or every large item. [1]
Check the date rather than a generic route map
A route map shows possibilities; a dated timetable shows whether the option fits your trip. Check the direction, day of the week and seasonal validity before reserving a room around the arrival time.
Read the operator’s current traffic notices again near departure. A downloaded summer timetable is not a live guarantee for a windy autumn day. Keep a land or overnight alternative where the next booking is important. [2]
Understand what the ticket actually reserves
Jadrolinija’s local-line FAQ distinguishes reserved departures from tickets without a reservation and lists the applicable routes. Split–Stari Grad is among the listed reserved lines. Read the current condition for your sailing rather than relying on an older statement that all vehicle ferries are first-come, first-served. [1]
| Before buying | Answer you need |
|---|---|
| Date and time | Is the ticket tied to this departure? |
| Capacity | Does it reserve the passenger or vehicle place? |
| Changes | Can details be edited or is cancellation required? |
| Seller | Who handles a refund or missed journey? |
| Boarding | Where and how early must the party report? |
Apply each operator’s rules to its own ticket. A document issued by one company should not be assumed usable on a competitor’s boat.
Enter people, vehicles and extra items correctly
For a car booking, check the vehicle category and required dimensions, including any roof or rear equipment. If using a rental, follow the operator’s process for details you do not yet know rather than inventing a registration number.
- Count all passengers, including children, in the required categories.
- Check bags against the specific operator and vessel rules.
- Ask about bicycles, pets or mobility equipment before payment.
- Check accessibility and assistance arrangements for the actual sailing.
- Verify rental-company ferry permission separately from the boat ticket.
Plan boarding and the walk to the boat
A port can have several departure points. Save the exact boarding instructions and allow time to locate the vessel with luggage. Do not use the cruise terminal or a pin marked harbor as a substitute for the passenger sailing’s location.

Keep the boarding deadline on the day’s plan and check it with the operator. A ferry advertised to leave after your flight lands still needs time for baggage, road transport and boarding. Avoid a connection that works only if every stage is immediate.
Keep the booking and a fallback together
- Save the ticket and booking reference offline.
- Record operator, full ports and the required arrival time.
- Store the seller’s change and cancellation conditions.
- Check the traffic notice before leaving the hotel.
- Protect the next night and important onward connection if the sailing changes.
A calm booking process is easier when you decide the fallback in advance. The cancellation guide below helps distinguish a voluntarily changed plan from an operator-cancelled journey, which can involve different refund and passenger-rights questions.
Read a ferry search result field by field
| Field | Example of a useful record | Mistake it prevents |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Split passenger boarding point supplied by the operator | Going to a generic harbor pin |
| Destination | Hvar Town or Stari Grad, written in full | Booking the correct island but wrong town |
| Mode | Foot passenger or vehicle ferry | Arriving with a car for a passenger-only boat |
| Reservation | The ticket's actual date, time and capacity terms | Treating every ticket as an open ticket |
| Onward journey | A named transfer or hotel access plan | Arriving without a way to reach the room |
For a rental car whose registration is not yet known, Jadrolinija's local-route FAQ specifically permits RENTAL in the license-plate field. You still need the correct vehicle category and dimensions; the placeholder is not permission to buy a small-car fare for an unknown larger vehicle. Apply this only to the operator and booking process that publishes it. [1]
Save the receipt and the transport document separately when the seller distinguishes them. A card authorization does not prove a ticket was issued. Check the passenger names or categories, route and document status immediately so a problem can be resolved while the sales channel is available.
Compare direct booking and a reseller on the same sailing
First identify the operating company and exact service. Then compare the final price, handling fees, cancellation terms and support route. A reseller can be convenient for searching multiple operators, but a familiar marketplace name does not make all its listings the same product or provide a universal missed-connection guarantee.
If the itinerary changes, contact the seller responsible for your ticket before buying replacements. Ask whether the change requires cancellation and a new purchase, whether a fee applies and when the old ticket stops being usable. Do not keep two contradictory bookings and assume you can choose either at boarding.
Bicycles, pets and mobility equipment need an explicit check for the vessel, not an inference from a photograph of a large ferry. Describe the item accurately and retain any written approval. If a party includes a car and some travelers arriving separately, ask how all passengers must be booked and present for boarding.
On departure morning, one person should hold the current ticket and everyone should know the operator and destination. Agree a meeting point before splitting up for food or supplies. Keep passports or other required identification, essential medication, water and a layer accessible. Treat the crew's current instructions as the final boarding guidance, particularly if a vessel or departure point changes.
BEFORE YOU GO
Common questions
Can a catamaran take my car?
Do not assume so. Check the vessel type and vehicle-booking option; passenger-only services are different from vehicle ferries.
Does every ticket guarantee a specific departure?
Check the current route-specific reservation rule. Jadrolinija’s FAQ explicitly distinguishes reserved and non-reserved local tickets.
Can I use another operator’s boat with the same ticket?
Treat operators’ tickets separately unless the seller explicitly confirms an applicable arrangement. Buy or change through the correct company.
