Money in Croatia: Cards, Cash, Tipping and Tourist Taxes

Prepare euro payments, compare card conversion choices, check Croatia's local tourist taxes and distinguish a voluntary tip from charges on the bill.

A good payment plan is less about carrying a large amount of cash and more about understanding the bill. A hotel deposit, card-currency choice, ferry fare and restaurant tip are different decisions. Keep the price, payment method and any extra charge visible before agreeing to the transaction.

Croatia uses the euro. HNB's currency-exchange information explains the change from kuna and the fixed historical conversion; that historical rate is not a current card exchange quote for dollars or pounds. This guide does not recommend a financial product or supply a live exchange rate. [1]

Prepare euros and a usable payment backup

Bring a card you can actually use abroad, know its authentication method and keep the issuer's contact route available offline. Check foreign-purchase and cash-withdrawal charges before departure. A bank card that works at home is not a promise that every terminal or ATM on the route will accept it.

Editorial preparation checks; acceptance and fees depend on the actual provider.

Online ticketWorking payment authentication and booking detailsWhat happens if payment succeeds but confirmation does not arrive?

Decide on cash using the immediate arrival needs and likely small purchases. Avoid treating an unverified national average as the amount everyone should withdraw. Keep access to another usable method so that a declined card does not determine whether you can reach your accommodation.

If traveling with others, make clear which expenses are paid jointly and which are individual. A room deposit may need a particular cardholder even when another person intends to reimburse the cost. Settle that contract question before arriving at the counter rather than relying on an informal agreement within the group.

Read the currency choice before accepting conversion

A terminal or ATM may offer a charge in your home currency instead of euros. This is commonly described as dynamic currency conversion. Read the displayed rate and charges before accepting it. Choosing euros leaves currency conversion to the applicable card arrangements; it does not guarantee that your issuer charges no fees.

Compare the offer with the issuer's terms, including any foreign-transaction charge and withdrawal charge. If you cannot evaluate the conversion offer, ask to review or decline it before confirming. Do not accept a choice simply because the screen labels it convenient or presents your home currency first.

For an illustrative card transaction, imagine a €100 bill and a terminal showing a home-currency total. The useful question is how that total was calculated and what your card would charge for a euro transaction. This guide has not retrieved today's rate or your issuer's terms, so it does not supply a claimed saving.

Keep the receipt and compare its currency with the option you selected. If a charge appears different, raise the issue with the merchant and issuer using the actual transaction record. An exchange-rate change is different from being charged in a currency you did not agree to.

  • Read the currency before the final confirmation.
  • Separate the ATM operator's charge from your issuer's charge.
  • Avoid assuming a fee-free purchase card also has fee-free cash withdrawals.
  • Retain the receipt when the selected currency or amount needs checking.

Tourist tax is local, dated and category-specific

Croatia's Tourism Tax Act gives the county assembly, or Zagreb's city assembly, the role of setting applicable amounts for its area. Accommodation categories matter, and household accommodation has a distinct flat-rate structure for the provider. Do not apply one hotel's nightly charge to every apartment, campsite or boat. [2]

Dubrovnik-Neretva County's 2026 decision, checked October 11, 2026. Campsites and other categories have separate treatment. [3]
Dubrovnik 2026 examplePublished adult rate per person per nightScope
April 1 to September 30€2.65Hospitality accommodation category in the county decision
Other dates€1.85The same category; not a nationwide rate

For two adults staying three nights in that category during July, the calculated example is 2 × 3 × €2.65 = €15.90. Using the same category in January gives 2 × 3 × €1.85 = €11.10. These are calculations from the published schedule, not a quote from a booked hotel or evidence of room availability.

Ask the property which category applies, whether the displayed total includes the applicable tax and how it appears on the booking and final bill. Keep the answer for the actual travel dates. A platform's summary, a hotel email and the local decision should describe the same stay before you treat the final total as settled.

Use a new local decision when planning another year. A 2026 table is evidence for that year only. If your trip crosses a seasonal boundary, ask the property to show the calculation by night rather than applying one rate to the whole reservation.

Check child reductions and what appears on the invoice

The Tourism Tax Act exempts children under 12 and sets a 50% reduction from age 12 until the eighteenth birthday. The entitlement must be supported by appropriate documents. Give the property accurate ages for the stay rather than selecting a cheaper age category yourself. [2]

A child's room charge, breakfast charge and tourist-tax treatment are separate. A property may quote accommodation for a specific occupancy while the tax calculation uses age. Confirm both, especially when a child will have a birthday before or during the stay. The law's tax reduction does not create a free bed or meal.

The Act distinguishes itemization for ordinary hospitality accommodation from household or family-farm accommodation. In the latter, the tax is not separately marked on the accommodation invoice under the cited provision. Do not tell a private host to add a nightly hotel tax merely because another property's bill showed one. [2]

When a bill is unclear, ask for the accommodation category and the explanation of the included total. Keep the conversation factual: dates, guests, ages and charges. If the booking information conflicts with the invoice, seek clarification before paying an unexpected addition, using the written reservation rather than a general blog rate.

For other exemptions or reductions, use the official rules and evidence required for your situation. A travel companion's entitlement is not automatically transferable. This guide covers common family questions and does not decide every statutory exemption or a disputed invoice.

Read the restaurant bill before adding a tip

Check the items, quantities and any disclosed service charge first. If the wording is unfamiliar, ask the staff what the line means before calculating an extra amount. A tip, a charge already on the invoice and the cost of the food should not be combined into one assumed percentage.

This guide does not set a mandatory tipping rate. If you wish to leave a tip, choose the amount yourself and ask whether it can be added by card or should be left separately. Avoid writing that a particular percentage is Croatian law or that every card payment passes a tip directly to the same employee.

For a group meal, agree whether people are contributing to one total and whether the discretionary tip is shared. Count any cash left with a card payment so that the same amount is not added twice. A short check of the bill is more useful than following a rounding rule without seeing what has already been charged.

Use the same approach with guides and drivers: understand the contracted price, any extra already agreed and the payment method. An optional thank-you does not resolve an undisclosed mandatory charge. Ask about additional costs when booking so the decision is clear before the service begins.

Keep deposits and final spending separate

  1. Read the booking's payable total, included tax and any local payment due.
  2. Check whether a deposit is collected or only held on the card.
  3. Record the release or refund terms stated by the provider.
  4. Keep enough payment capacity for the rest of the trip while the deposit is outstanding.
  5. Compare the final invoice with the reservation and retain receipts for unresolved charges.

A card hold is not the same as money available for immediate spending, even when it is expected to be released later. The provider's release action and your issuer's posting process can differ. This guide has not verified a universal release time for Croatian hotels or car rentals.

Build a travel budget from room totals, applicable taxes, transport and meals, then keep deposits in a separate column. Our Croatia cost guide gives a worked ferry comparison and a hypothetical budget. Separating these figures helps you understand both the eventual cost and the payment capacity required along the way.

BEFORE YOU GO

Common questions

Should I pay in euros or my home currency?

Read the conversion offer and your issuer's terms. Paying in euros leaves conversion to the card arrangements, but issuer fees can still apply. This guide does not claim a guaranteed saving without those terms.

Is tourist tax the same throughout Croatia?

No. Check the applicable place, year, season, accommodation category and traveler entitlement. The Dubrovnik figures here are a dated local example, not a rate for every property or destination. [3]

Do all private apartments add a nightly tax line?

Do not assume that. The Act gives household accommodation a distinct provider flat-rate structure and invoice treatment. Ask the host to explain the included total and applicable category. [2]
