Medical planning for Saudi Arabia starts with the service you need and the location you occupy. A routine city appointment, a prescription refill and an emergency during a remote drive require different arrangements. Keep the official emergency contacts alongside your accommodation address, insurer's assistance number and a short medicine record.

Official sources were checked on 13 October 2026. This guide covers general visitors' access to care and records, without diagnosing illness or recommending medicines. It does not apply pilgrimage-specific health requirements to every tourist, and it does not assume a visa-associated policy covers every treatment or journey. The right answers depend on the patient, service and issued insurance documents.

Save ambulance contacts separately from the 937 advice service

The 937 service page describes round-the-clock medical consultation; it does not replace the listed ambulance contacts. [3]

Keep the address in Arabic and English if available, including the entrance and room or floor. For a road journey, save your current coordinates and the route details rather than giving a distant hotel as the location. If a companion makes the call, they should describe the patient's situation directly and remain available for instructions.

This guide has not tested either emergency number from every region or roaming network. Check the local arrangements with your accommodation or operator before remote travel, and have a workable calling plan. If one contact does not connect during an emergency, seek immediate help using the other published route or someone who can place a local call.

Confirm a routine provider and the service needed

The Ministry of Health's 937 page describes 24-hour medical consultation through doctors and support with health-service enquiries and complaints. It is a useful official contact when you need guidance on accessing care. We have not verified immediate English-language support for every call, so clearly request the language assistance you need. [3]

For a routine consultation, ask whether the provider can see the patient's age group and assess the stated problem. Confirm the appointment, branch, department and hours. A hospital group name alone is not the location, and a general booking application may offer services different from the assessment you need.

FCDO notes that serious cases may be transferred to a major-city hospital some distance away. Before a remote drive or isolated stay, discuss ongoing care with your own clinician and verify the relevant local facilities. Do not assume a basic health centre can provide every specialist service or that a city hospital is reachable within a particular time. [2]

Ask the facility what interpretation is available for the actual appointment, how you will receive written instructions and whether follow-up is offered remotely or requires returning. If you have already consulted another doctor during the trip, bring those records so the next provider can understand what has been assessed and prescribed.

Find the actual visitor policy before asking about direct payment

The Insurance Authority's Travel Insurance (Tourism) Inquiry page describes a service that lets visitors and tourists check policy status and validity using the passport number associated with issuance. Use the official service to identify your arrangement, then obtain the insurer's assistance contact and the policy documents. A validity result does not authorize a particular medical bill. [4]

Check the patient's name, policy dates and insurer rather than stopping at the visa confirmation. If you have additional travel insurance, keep both sets of details and ask how they should be used for this episode. Do not assume the hospital can determine the coordination of benefits simply from seeing two cards.

Prepare accessible funds as well as the policy. For non-emergency care, ask the billing desk what the estimate includes and how tests or further consultations will be charged. In an emergency, request help first and contact the insurer as soon as practical. Buying new cover after an incident is not a substitute for checking the policy that already applies.

Arrange a local prescription and discuss medicines professionally

FCDO states that UK prescriptions are not accepted in Saudi Arabia and that prescriptions must be issued by doctors registered and licensed by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialities. Bring the home prescription and a clear medicine record as clinical information, and arrange a local consultation where required. Do not assume an overseas prescription is a dispensing instruction. [2]

Ask the pharmacist which medicine requires a local prescription, whether the exact ingredient and strength are stocked and when dispensing is available. For regular treatment, make the enquiry before your last dose. A familiar international brand name does not establish an identical formulation or suitable substitute.

Keep the active ingredient, strength, dosage form, prescribed use and prescriber's details together. If a medicine is lost, show the clinician that record and explain the remaining trip length. Let the clinician and pharmacist determine the next step rather than selecting a replacement from a retailer's search results.

If you need a medicine requiring special storage or equipment, arrange that with your clinician and the provider before traveling. A hotel refrigerator, pharmacy delivery option or car's air conditioning is not proof that the required storage conditions can be maintained. Confirm the practical arrangement and any airline carriage requirements separately.

Use the current SFDA controlled-medicine clearance process

SFDA's individual-services page links a 2026-08 traveler Controlled Drug System manual. It covers the traveler account, arrival or departure, flight details and clearance request. Use those instructions for your medicine rather than assuming a prescription alone is enough. [5]

Required records shown include patient identification, a prescription or medical report, a medicine photograph and medicine details. The manual also covers carrying medicine for another patient with identity and consent evidence. Prepare accurate records and ask SFDA about uncertainty before submission. [5]

The status screen distinguishes Submitted, Completed and Rejected, and describes Completed as accepted, with a View License step. A sent request is not an issued clearance. Save accepted permission and follow its terms. We have not obtained individual authorization or a permitted quantity. [5]

Some SFDA public notices focus specifically on Hajj and Umrah travelers. This guide does not turn a pilgrimage-specific quantity or health instruction into a universal rule for ordinary tourists. Confirm your ingredient, amount, travel dates and purpose with SFDA, and check transit-country rules too. Discuss any required treatment change with your clinician.

Keep records and coordinate follow-up before moving on

  • Bring identification, medicine information, policy documents and the insurer's assistance contact.
  • Request the clinical report, test results, prescription and discharge or follow-up instructions.
  • Keep itemized invoices, deposits, final payment evidence and the case reference together.
  • Ask who reviews outstanding results and what should happen before the next drive or flight.

For a visit that interrupts a Riyadh, AlUla or Red Sea itinerary, tell the clinician what travel comes next. Ask whether the patient should remain nearby and how further assessment will be arranged. A paid excursion or hotel checkout deadline should not determine the medical decision.

If a transfer is needed, have the treating team and assistance service coordinate the destination and transport. Do not book an ordinary sightseeing vehicle on the assumption that it can provide medical transport. For a flight, ask the airline about documentation after receiving medical advice on travel; an airline's administrative acceptance is a separate matter.

Use the Saudi insurance guide to assess the broader benefits before purchase and the arrival guide for entry documents. After care is needed, the useful sequence is professional help, provider and insurer coordination, then accurate records and follow-up. Neither an insurance-validity lookup nor a completed reimbursement form establishes that every cost is covered.

BEFORE YOU GO

Common questions

Is 937 the Saudi ambulance number?

The Ministry of Health describes 937 as a consultation and assistance service. The Saudi Red Crescent lists 997 for ambulances, while FCDO also directs travelers to 911 for an ambulance. Keep those purposes clear and follow the emergency dispatcher's instructions. [3] [1] [2]

Does valid visitor insurance mean the hospital will bill it directly?

No. The Insurance Authority's inquiry checks policy status and validity. Confirm the actual insurer, provider arrangement and authorization for the visit separately, including any patient payment. [4]

Is submitting a CDS request enough to bring a controlled medicine?

No. SFDA's manual distinguishes a sent request from an accepted request and shows how to view the license after acceptance. Check the requirements for your exact medicine and obtain the required permission before travel. [5]
