The useful question is not simply whether Saudi Arabia accepts cards. It is whether your particular card works at the moment you need it, whether a quoted price is the final payable amount, and whether enough balance remains available after hotel or rental deposits. Preparing those details makes arrival much simpler.
Visit Saudi identifies the Saudi riyal as the currency and describes cash, major international cards and digital payments as widely used. That does not promise acceptance of every foreign card at every merchant. A second payment method remains useful even when most of your trip is cashless. [1]
Set up three ways to pay before departure
| Payment layer | Purpose | Check before travelling |
|---|---|---|
| Main card | Hotels, transport and everyday purchases | Foreign purchase fees, PIN and app authentication |
| Independent backup | A declined card, lost wallet or issuer outage | A different account or issuer where possible |
| Small cash reserve | A purchase or tip where digital payment is unsuitable | Useful denominations and secure storage |
A second copy of the same card in your phone is convenient, but it is not fully independent: an account block may affect both. Keep a separate card away from your main wallet and make sure you can access its banking app without relying on a single device or a phone number that cannot receive messages abroad.
Test your mobile data arrangement before depending on an app-based ride at the airport. Download bank contact details and hotel confirmation documents. These steps do not require carrying a large amount of cash; they reduce the chance that one failed login prevents you from reaching your accommodation.
Compare conversion costs in the same currency
SAMA's reference-rate page showed USD 1 to SAR 3.75 in the dated September 2026 table checked for this guide. A reference rate is not a promise of the cash exchange or card rate you will receive. Your provider can add a conversion margin, transaction fee or ATM withdrawal charge. [2]
When a terminal offers a choice between SAR and your home currency, compare who is doing the conversion. Choosing SAR normally leaves conversion to your card provider; accepting the merchant's home-currency offer uses that offer's rate. Read the displayed total and your own card terms instead of accepting a reassuring currency symbol automatically.
For an ATM, distinguish the machine's fee from your bank's fee and any currency conversion offer. Cancel if the terms are unclear. A larger withdrawal can reduce repeated fixed charges, but withdrawing more than you can safely manage creates a different problem. Choose the amount from your actual cash needs.
Keep a simple SAR budget even if you monitor spending in dollars or pounds. Re-converting every small purchase at a different assumed exchange rate makes it harder to compare hotels, taxis and tours. Save the original currency and final charged amount for larger bookings.
Read VAT and hotel totals without double-counting
ZATCA's current implementing-regulation guidance identifies the standard VAT rate as 15% where applicable. Its hotel guidance explains that relevant accommodation and associated charges can form part of the taxable amount. This is not a reason to add an invented flat hotel surcharge to every reservation. Read the actual itemized quote. [3] [4]
Compare the final amount for the same dates, guests, room and meal plan. A search-result price may be a starting point, while the checkout explains taxes, local fees or payment at the property. Save that breakdown. A cheaper headline room can cost more once breakfast, transfers or compulsory charges are included.
Ask the property to explain an unfamiliar line before paying. Use the charge's name, amount and basis rather than arguing from another hotel's invoice. Different services and contracts can produce different totals, and a service charge is not automatically the same thing as a voluntary gratuity.
Treat tipping as a separate decision
This guide does not prescribe a universal Saudi tipping percentage. For a restaurant, check the bill first, then decide whether to leave an additional voluntary amount for the service. For a driver or guide, ask whether the agreed price includes all compulsory costs and whether any gratuity is optional.
A private tour quote should state who receives payment and in which currency. Do not discover at the end of a long day that the driver expected cash while you assumed an online booking covered everything. If an intermediary says tips are included, ask whether that applies to the guide, driver or both.
- Keep any optional tip separate from the contractual tour balance.
- Use small denominations if you choose to tip in cash.
- Do not treat a suggested percentage in an app as a compulsory fee.
- Resolve a disputed charge with the business using the saved agreement and receipt.
For a group, nominate one person to settle shared costs and record each payment. That avoids duplicate tipping or two people paying the same remaining balance. A short note on a shared itinerary is usually enough; it need not become a complicated accounting exercise.
Budget for deposits and delayed refunds
A hotel or car-rental authorization can reduce available credit without being the final cost of the stay or rental. Ask for the amount, accepted card type, cardholder requirements and release procedure before arrival. A prepaid booking does not necessarily eliminate every security deposit.
Keep the authorization receipt and final bill. If a held amount remains after checkout, contact the merchant and issuer with those records. Do not assume a release will appear instantly in the banking app or spend money that is still unavailable. The practical issue is usable balance during the rest of the trip.
Cancellation and refund are different stages. A booking can be cancelled successfully while the payment is still being processed back to your card. Save the cancellation reference and the provider's stated timescale. If a replacement booking is needed immediately, your budget may temporarily need to support both amounts.
Use a simple payment routine on the ground
- Check the currency and final total before authorizing payment.
- Keep receipts for accommodation, transport, tours and deposits.
- Review larger transactions while details are still fresh.
- Maintain enough accessible balance for the next transfer and overnight stay.
- Reconcile shared expenses before the group separates.
If a payment fails, avoid repeatedly trying the same transaction without checking whether a pending authorization already exists. Ask the merchant what they see, check your banking app and use the backup method when necessary. Keep the receipt showing the successful payment to distinguish it from an earlier attempt.
Before the final airport journey, settle any hotel extras and retain a usable card or small reserve. Do not spend every remaining riyal before you know whether you need a meal, transfer adjustment or baggage service. The best payment plan leaves modest flexibility without requiring a large surplus of currency.
BEFORE YOU GO
Common questions
Can I travel without cash?
Many major purchases can be made digitally, but universal acceptance is not guaranteed. A modest cash reserve and an independent backup card are more resilient than relying on one phone or account.
Should I add 15% to every advertised price?
No. First check whether VAT is already included and what the final invoice says. Only add tax to a genuinely tax-exclusive amount where it applies.
Is a hotel deposit part of my travel spending?
A refundable authorization is different from a final charge, but it can reduce available funds. Track both your actual costs and the balance temporarily held.
