Saudi Arabia Travel Costs: Cities, AlUla, Transport and Experiences

Build a Saudi Arabia budget from your route, room nights, intercity journeys and booked experiences, with a transparent worked example in SAR.

A short Riyadh city stay and a route combining Riyadh, Jeddah and AlUla do not have the same cost structure. The second plan adds journeys, transfers and potentially different room markets. A single national daily figure hides those decisions instead of helping you make them.

The framework below uses Saudi riyals and a clearly labelled example. It is not a survey of current hotel prices or a promise that a tour is available. Replace each assumed amount with a dated quote before deciding whether your itinerary fits the budget.

Start with nights and travel days

Write a calendar with each overnight location, arrival time and departure time. Count nights separately from days: a seven-day trip commonly contains six hotel nights, while a late flight might require an extra night or paid late checkout. Do not let a tidy daily average conceal the actual room bill.

AlUla extensionRooms, arrival transport and experiencesTransfers to each experience meeting point
A further cityIntercity fare plus two local transfersA day consumed by changing bases

If the itinerary is over budget, remove or shorten a transfer-heavy extension before stripping useful time from every destination. Two places enjoyed at a workable pace can offer more than three places visited through a sequence of airport queues. That is an editorial tradeoff, not a claim about everyone's preferred style.

Compare accommodation on the final stay total

Search the exact dates and party size, then record the full price for the entire stay. Specify whether you need one room, twin beds, an extra bed or more than one room. A per-room quote cannot be divided by two if the room does not actually accommodate your travelling party.

Check breakfast, parking, cancellation deadline, check-in time and any compulsory charges. The standard VAT rate is 15% where applicable, but many displayed totals already incorporate it. Use the property's final tax breakdown instead of adding a second blanket percentage. [1]

Location has a transport price. A cheaper northern Jeddah hotel may work well for a coastal plan yet require longer journeys for several Al-Balad visits. A Riyadh room near a genuinely usable metro entrance can be more convenient than a slightly cheaper property separated from the station by difficult roads.

For AlUla, obtain the room quote before committing to the extension. Then add the airport or road arrival, hotel-to-meeting-point transport and the experiences that motivated the visit. An attractive flight price alone does not establish the cost of the stay.

Price intercity journeys door to door

Saudi Arabia's passenger rail routes are not a single network linking every tourist city. SAR identifies the North and East routes from Riyadh and the separate Haramain corridor in the west. A Riyadh–Jeddah or Riyadh–AlUla plan therefore needs an appropriate flight or road comparison, rather than an assumed through train. [2]

For a flight, add any baggage, seat selection you need, transport at both ends and the cost of arrival timing. For a road transfer, request a total for your party with the luggage capacity, route, stops, waiting and driver arrangements stated. Compare equivalent services, not a shared-seat fare against an entire private vehicle.

If considering a rental car, include the rental period, parking, fuel, one-way return charge and deposit requirements. Do not count a refundable deposit as a permanent expense, but do allow enough available credit. City sightseeing and a remote desert excursion may also require different vehicle permissions and driving experience.

This produces SAR 3,894 per person for the included items if both travellers share every cost equally. It does not mean a solo traveller pays half the room bill. Increasing the room allowance by SAR 150 per night adds SAR 900 before contingency; adding another city can change several lines simultaneously.

The point of the table is to expose assumptions you can change. Replace the room and transport numbers first, then price your must-do experiences. If a special event or limited accommodation pushes a quote above the allowance, revise the plan before paying non-refundable deposits elsewhere.

Choose paid experiences by the complete inclusion list

For a desert tour, compare vehicle, guide language, group size, pickup, duration, food, route and cancellation terms. A lower price at a distant meeting point can lose its advantage after adding transport. A private tour may be sensible for a group but costly for a solo traveller; calculate each person's actual share.

Do not count a dining credit as free cash. It may apply only at particular outlets, on a particular day and subject to a minimum spend. Diriyah's official access conditions also distinguish entry from restaurant table availability, so an admission product does not automatically secure dinner. [3]

Leave some time without paid bookings. A waterfront walk or a flexible neighbourhood meal can balance a ticket-heavy itinerary and provide a useful alternative if an outdoor excursion changes. Savings are most valuable when they preserve the part of the trip you actually care about.

Keep the final budget usable during disruption

  1. Obtain dated final quotes for rooms, major transport and essential experiences.
  2. Mark each as paid, payable later, refundable deposit or optional allowance.
  3. Keep cancellation deadlines in local time beside the relevant booking.
  4. Set aside accessible funds for a changed transfer or extra night.
  5. Recheck the total after every added destination.

A contingency is not a prediction that something will fail. It gives you choices if a delayed arrival makes the planned train or excursion impractical. Keep some flexibility in both money and time; a spare amount is less helpful when every remaining day is already committed.

Record confirmed costs separately from estimates until the trip is complete. That makes the budget useful for decisions now and for reviewing spending later. It also prevents an appealing but unconfirmed fare from quietly becoming the foundation of the whole itinerary.

BEFORE YOU GO

Common questions

Is AlUla always more expensive than Riyadh?

Do not assume a universal ranking. Price your dates, accommodation and transfers. An AlUla extension has its own transport and experience costs that a city-only budget would omit.

Does the example include international flights?

No. The worked total excludes international flights, visa-related costs and insurance. It uses assumed local costs for two adults, which must be replaced with actual quotes.

What should I cut first if the total is too high?

Review extra destination changes, room location and paid excursions before reducing every meal or buffer. Removing one costly transfer can preserve more useful sightseeing time.
