A rental car can connect places that are inconvenient by public transport, but it also makes the traveler responsible for the route, vehicle contract and response to a breakdown. The first decision in the current situation is whether the journey should happen, not which car is cheapest.

This guide records operator conditions checked on 18 October 2026 for future planning and for readers assessing necessary transport. It does not recommend a leisure drive during the current warnings. The named rental examples are supplier-specific and are not a statement of one rule that applies to every company or nationality.

Make the travel-advice decision before selecting a vehicle

Read the Saudi safety guide and reopen the official sources before arranging a journey. A warning can cover the whole country or a specific airport, province or border area. Do not infer that choosing a car instead of a plane removes the security concern. A road route needs its own current assessment and may introduce new restrictions.

If travel is necessary, identify the precise start and finish, all intermediate stops and the reason for any detour. Ask the provider whether the proposed use is accepted and whether the vehicle can be returned as planned if circumstances change. A confirmed car reservation is not evidence that the road is open or that the journey is recommended.

For a future leisure itinerary, keep routes and prices provisional. The appropriate plan may change when official advice, transport operations or insurance terms change. Do not lock in a remote hotel simply because a car category appears available today; the accommodation and journey must remain workable together.

Distinguish legal driving permission from rental acceptance

UK government guidance says a UK photocard license can be used for the first three months after arrival, while a rental company may require an International Driving Permit. That statement is specific to UK license holders; it is not a universal rule for every foreign license. Check the rule applicable to your nationality and status, then ask the actual supplier what it accepts. [3]

Supplier conditions checked 18 October 2026. These examples do not override local law. [5] [4]
Checked supplier examplePublished document approachAction before payment
Budget Saudi ArabiaLocal licenses for Saudi citizens/residents and GCC nationals; international license for other nationalsObtain written confirmation for your original license and IDP
SIXT Saudi ArabiaLists accepted national-license categories and requires an IDP for non-Roman scripts; Saudi residents/nationals need a Saudi licenseConfirm country of issue, residency, document validity and vehicle category

Carry the original national license along with any required permit and identification. Ask whether the supplier needs a particular remaining validity period, how long the license must have been held and whether every additional driver must be present at collection. A photo on a phone is not necessarily an accepted document.

Do this before buying a non-refundable rate. If your license, age or residency status is outside the published example, do not assume the counter will make an exception. A booking engine accepting payment may not have completed the document checks required at collection.

Compare age, card and deposit requirements

SIXT's published Saudi conditions set a general age range of 21–70, with some vehicle categories requiring 25 or 30 and at least a year holding the license. It requires an accepted credit card in the renter's name and does not accept prepaid or debit cards under those terms. Its listed deposit varies by category, with examples of SAR 2,000, 3,000 and 5,000. Confirm the chosen category and exact hold. [4]

Budget also describes a credit-card deposit at collection, even when a voucher has already been issued. Its collection guidance says cash, cheques and debit cards are usually not accepted. Treat 'prepaid' and 'no deposit required' as different claims: paying the rental price does not necessarily remove the security hold. [5]

Ask how much available credit is needed in addition to the rental charge and when the hold is normally released. Allow for your other hotel and travel deposits. A low daily rate is of little use if the required card or credit limit will not be available when you arrive.

Price the whole contract and distinguish deposit from excess

Cost or conditionWhy it matters
Daily rental and taxesCompare the same dates, pickup time and vehicle class
Mileage allowanceLong routes may add per-kilometer charges
One-way return and location feesAirport or different-branch returns may change the total
Additional driver and child seatsA request may need confirmation and a separate fee
DepositA security hold, not necessarily the maximum liability
Damage excess and exclusionsDetermine what you could owe after an incident
Fuel and late returnCheck the exact return standard and charging period

The deposit is not the same as the excess, and an excess reduction does not necessarily cover every type of damage. Ask specifically about tires, glass, underbody, roof, lost keys, incorrect fuel and recovery. Read the rental company's protection and any separate reimbursement policy as different products: one may require payment first and a later claim.

SIXT's published protection conditions require a police or Najm record for claims. Ask the branch to explain the process before driving away and save its assistance contact. Do not settle an incident informally and assume a damage waiver will still apply without the required documentation. [4]

Get the final total in writing, including all approved drivers and equipment. Compare the cancellation deadline and no-show treatment before prepaying. If a flight delay could prevent collection, ask whether the desk holds the car, how to notify it and what happens outside opening hours.

Match the route to written permission, not the SUV badge

A larger vehicle does not automatically permit off-road driving. Ask the supplier to approve the actual roads, unpaved access, remote accommodation approach and any desert segment. If the contract does not clearly authorize the intended use, choose a different arrangement or remove that part of the route. Do not infer coverage from an image of an SUV on sand.

A guided desert activity is a separate product with its own current security assessment, weather decision, vehicle, crew and insurance. It is not a workaround for a nationwide travel warning. For a future trip, compare the operator's permitted activity with the rental contract rather than attempting a self-drive excursion simply to avoid a tour fee.

International travel is another separate permission. SIXT's listed cross-border option is limited to eligible Saudi residents traveling to specified GCC destinations with written branch authorization; it is not a general tourist entitlement. A visitor should not assume that a Saudi rental can be driven to a neighboring country's airport. [4]

Even where a supplier permits a route, confirm entry requirements, an operating border crossing and current official advice independently. Contract permission does not settle immigration or security. Keep every part of the proposed journey within what you have actually verified.

Plan a realistic paved-road day and a breakdown response

For necessary road travel or a future trip after reassessment, favor a manageable daytime route with known stops. Add time for fuel, meals, rest and finding the accommodation entrance. Do not turn the longest possible driving day into the default itinerary simply because a map offers a fast estimate.

Use the National Center for Meteorology's warnings for the route and validity period. Rain, dust and reduced visibility need a different response from ordinary clear-weather driving. Follow closures and do not enter floodwater or an unverified shortcut. A desert region can still have a rain-related warning. [6]

  • Confirm the correct fuel type and where the next practical fuel stop is.
  • Keep water, charged phones, offline route information and essential supplies accessible.
  • Ask how to contact roadside assistance and what recovery the contract includes.
  • Establish how the supplier will arrange a replacement if the car cannot continue.
  • Tell a trusted contact the route and expected arrival without posting private details publicly.

If a breakdown occurs, prioritize the immediate safety of the occupants and follow local emergency instructions. Contact the supplier through the number on the contract before arranging a repair or tow that may need authorization. Do not assume a general assistance benefit covers recovery from any terrain or unlimited distance.

Inspect at pickup and document the return

  1. Match the supplied vehicle and contract to the reservation, drivers and agreed equipment.
  2. Check exterior damage, glass, tires, interior, fuel level and any warning lights with staff.
  3. Record existing damage on the signed inspection form and keep clear photographs.
  4. Confirm the return branch, access route, opening hours and fuel requirement.
  5. At return, obtain a receipt or written record and keep it until charges and deposits are settled.

Budget's collection guidance specifically asks renters to check the pre-rental inspection form and have unrecorded damage added before accepting the vehicle. Use that principle with any supplier: photographs help, but they should support a corrected inspection record rather than replace telling staff about a problem. [5]

For an airport return, allow time for the actual branch handover and transfer to the terminal, subject to current airport instructions. A map pin for the airport is not necessarily the rental return entrance. If a changed flight alters the return time, obtain approval for the extension or new location instead of assuming the original price still applies.

Retain the fuel receipt, inspection record, final invoice and correspondence. Review later charges against the contract and use the supplier's formal dispute process if necessary. Clear records make it easier to resolve an issue without reconstructing the trip from memory.

BEFORE YOU GO

Common questions

Should I plan a leisure road trip under the current warnings?

Reassess or postpone it according to the official advice applicable to you. This article's rental checklist is not a recommendation to travel during the nationwide warnings recorded on 18 October 2026.

Does an SUV rental include permission to drive in the desert?

No such permission should be assumed. Obtain written approval for the actual route and terrain, check exclusions and recovery, and do not use a guided activity as a workaround for travel warnings.

Is the deposit the most I can lose after damage?

Not necessarily. The deposit, excess, exclusions and reporting obligations are different parts of the contract. Ask for each amount and condition before payment and keep the required incident documentation.
