Flight update checked 28 October 2026: British Airways launched London Gatwick–Colombo on 23 October, with three weekly winter services. Jetstar launched Melbourne–Colombo on 25 August, also three times weekly. Use the local arrival date on your actual ticket as day one below; these announcements do not establish availability for a particular date. [1] [2]
A Sri Lanka itinerary can look compact on a map and still spend too much of the holiday on the road. Choose the coast and a few overnight bases before adding every famous stop. These seven-, ten- and fourteen-day plans show where to spend extra nights and what to leave for another trip.
These are editorial route templates, not booked services. Count the arrival and departure days, verify transport on your dates and choose the coast that suits the season before committing to every night.
Choose the coast and travel direction first
An east-coast trip and a southwest-coast trip have different directions and transfer needs. Sri Lanka Tourism’s beach and climate information is the starting point for this choice. [5] [4]
Choose a realistic transport mix: a driver for longer road segments, a confirmed rail journey where it fits, or independent travel with the necessary local connections. Do not select non-refundable rooms on the assumption that the complete Kandy–Ella train will be available.
Seven days: culture without every region
| Days | Base and nights | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Near CMB / Negombo: 1 night | Arrival and rest |
| 2–3 | Sigiriya-area base: 2 nights | A cultural visit and one regional outing |
| 4–5 | Kandy: 2 nights | Culture with a usable full day |
| 6 | Airport-side base: 1 night | Return without tying departure to a long same-day drive |
| 7 | Departure | Airport journey |
This version deliberately leaves out Ella and a full beach stay. If the coast is the priority, replace part of the cultural route rather than adding it on top. A short trip works better when you choose what to leave for another visit.
Ten days: culture, hill country and one coast
| Days | Base and nights | Planning role |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Airport-side base: 1 night | Arrival |
| 2–3 | Sigiriya area: 2 nights | Cultural Triangle |
| 4 | Kandy: 1 night | A focused cultural stop |
| 5–6 | Ella: 2 nights | A full hill-country day |
| 7–8 | Chosen southern coast: 2 nights | A modest beach stay, when season fits |
| 9 | Airport-side base: 1 night | Departure buffer |
| 10 | Departure | Airport journey |
Treat Kandy-to-Ella and Ella-to-coast moves as substantial travel days. If that pace is too much, remove Kandy or Ella rather than shrinking every destination to a few rushed hours.
Fourteen days: add time, not only stops
One slower allocation uses one airport-side night, three near Sigiriya, two in Kandy, three in Ella, three on the chosen coast and one near the departure airport: thirteen nights for fourteen calendar days. Reorder the coastal part when an east-coast season is the better fit.
To include one southern safari within the same thirteen nights, use one airport-side night, three near Sigiriya, one in Kandy, two in Ella, two near your chosen park, three on the south coast and one airport-side night. That is 1 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 1 = 13 nights. Day 8 is the move to the park area, day 9 is the safari day, and day 10 is the coast transfer. Confirm the gate and each road leg before booking. For fewer hotel changes, keep the coast base and compare a return day tour instead.

Choose the bookings that make this route work
Confirm the train or prepare road alternatives
Sri Lanka Railways’ published restoration notice confirms Badulla–Nanu Oya service after work on the affected section. That does not by itself confirm a complete through journey from Kandy to Ella for your date. [7]
Check the official seat and timetable services, then confirm the operating section before relying on a ticket search result. If the needed service cannot be confirmed, obtain a road-transfer plan and revise the day’s activities. The train should enhance the route rather than make the whole itinerary impossible. [6]
Book the route with useful buffers
- Check entry documents and international flights.
- Choose the season-compatible coast and overnight sequence.
- Count nights separately from calendar days.
- Verify long transfers, driver terms and any operating rail segment.
- Reserve rooms and dated experiences with compatible cancellation terms.
- Protect the final airport journey and keep an alternative for heavy weather.
Families may benefit from longer stays and fewer hill-road moves. Couples can use additional days for a quieter setting rather than a longer checklist. The best route is the one that leaves usable time where you sleep.
A slower fourteen-day night plan
| Days | Base and nights | Main task |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Airport-side base: 1 night | Arrive and rest |
| 2–4 | Sigiriya area: 3 nights | Cultural visits with separate recovery time |
| 5–6 | Kandy: 2 nights | Transfer and a full local day |
| 7–9 | Ella: 3 nights | A confirmed road or rail arrival and hill-country time |
| 10–12 | Chosen southern coast: 3 nights | Beach time if the season fits |
| 13 | Airport-side base: 1 night | Return before the flight day |
| 14 | Departure | Airport transfer |
For an east-coast-focused version, consider airport-side arrival, Sigiriya-area culture, an extended eastern beach stay and an airport-side finish. Add Kandy or another inland base only if the transfer cost in time is worth it. You do not have to visit Ella on every Sri Lanka itinerary.
For a safari, replace a night or a regional outing instead of quietly adding another hotel to the same number of days. Compare Udawalawe or Yala by the actual route to the chosen coast. A dawn safari after a late long-distance arrival and before another long drive can be a tiring way to experience both wildlife and the road.
Turn an attractive route into a bookable journey
Make a transfer sheet with the departure hotel, destination hotel, mode, expected pickup and the provider's realistic duration range. We have not collected live timed road runs for these legs, so the route tables deliberately allocate travel days rather than inventing precise door-to-door hours. Ask a driver to include breaks and likely conditions when quoting.
For each arrival day, allow just one optional stop until the actual journey is clear. Long hill-country moves are poor candidates for several timed attractions. If taking a partial train journey, include the road transfer to the station and the pickup at the far end; those can change the day's shape considerably.
- Fix international arrival and departure, including local calendar dates.
- Choose the coast and a small number of overnight bases.
- Verify the transport between every pair of bases.
- Reserve the rooms and important dated activities with matching flexibility.
- Keep one activity-free margin and a practical final airport return.
A seven-day traveler should remove regions before shortening every stay. A fourteen-day traveler can add rest before adding distance. Compare how many full days you actually get in each place, not merely how many names fit into the booking list. If a canceled train would collapse the entire route, arrange the road alternative before calling the itinerary finished.
BEFORE YOU GO
Common questions
Can I fit both coasts into ten days?
It adds long moves to an already active route. Choose one coast unless seeing both is the main purpose and you are willing to remove inland stops.
What if the scenic train is unavailable?
Use a verified road transfer or an actually operating partial segment, then recalculate the day. Do not keep the old itinerary merely because a generic booking page lists the route.
Should I drive to CMB from a distant coast on flight day?
Assess the actual distance, road conditions and check-in deadline. A closer final night is often the simpler way to avoid relying on one long same-day transfer.
