Sri Lanka offers several ways to build surfing into a holiday, but a package name can hide important differences. Five coached sessions, five guided outings and five days of board rental are not equivalent. Neither is a non-residential course the same purchase as a week including a bed and meals.

We checked official tourism information and the current offers of Soul & Surf and Lapoint on 16 October 2026. They are concrete examples for comparing products, not a ranking based on personal lessons or a guarantee of surf conditions. A school should assess your ability and the day's spot before putting you in the water.

Choose the coast before choosing the camp

Lapoint's Ahangama guide describes a south-coast dry-season surfing window from November to April and more powerful, choppier conditions in the wetter part of the year. Some southern camps operate across seasons, so do not interpret that window as a universal closure outside it. Equally, an open camp is not evidence that its nearest break suits a first-timer every day. [4]

If surfing is one activity within a wider holiday, choose a lesson near the coast already on your itinerary. If learning to surf is the main purpose, choose the season and teaching arrangement first, then build the other stops around them. Crossing the island simply to use a familiar camp name can consume days better spent learning.

Describe your experience plainly: whether you have surfed before, whether you can paddle and catch waves independently, and how comfortable you are swimming in open water. A booking form's 'intermediate' label can mean different things to different people. Explain what you can actually do so the school can place you appropriately.

Do not use a beginner label as a substitute for swimming ability. Ask the school about its requirements and explain any uncertainty before paying. If a participant cannot meet the requirements, choose another activity rather than assuming a shallow-looking beach or the presence of a board resolves the problem.

Compare real teaching time and group size

Soul & Surf's Ahangama page lists two-hour private lessons and two-hour group lessons, with a stated group ratio of one coach to five students. Its lesson description includes land theory, equipment and local transport from its meeting base. Two hours of a lesson does not mean two uninterrupted hours standing on a wave. [1]

Ask whether the advertised duration includes changing, briefing, travel and beach theory. Those parts have value, but they affect how much time is available in the water. Also ask whether the maximum ratio applies during the water session and whether groups of different levels share one instructor.

For a multi-day course, identify how feedback is delivered: a short discussion, individual corrections or video review. If progress matters more than simply joining a group, a smaller class or fewer well-taught sessions can be a better purchase than a large package with vague 'surf daily' language. No responsible comparison can promise you will reach a particular level by the final day.

Separate a non-residential week from a package with a bed

Soul & Surf also advertises a non-residential progression week with five two-hour lessons, video analysis, workshops, other activities and specified meals. It is organized around a weekly schedule with a rest day. Confirm the arrival day and included sessions; the course description should not be read as including accommodation. [1]

Lapoint's standard Sri Lanka Surf Camp package lists seven nights, seven breakfasts, five dinners and five two-hour surf lessons. It includes equipment use for six days subject to conditions and local transport to lessons where needed. Its separate Guiding package is for experienced surfers and does not include equipment. [3]

For the standard five-lesson example, five times two hours equals ten scheduled lesson hours. That calculation makes comparison easier, but it is not a measure of individual instructor attention or a guarantee of ten hours in the sea. Add the cost of lunches, the remaining dinners and the room category you actually want before comparing with independent accommodation and lessons.

  • Confirm whether the price is per person and whether the room is shared or private.
  • Count the meals, lessons and nights rather than assuming 'week' means every item is included daily.
  • Check whether board rental outside lessons is supervised or independent use.
  • Ask about equipment damage charges, deposits and the boards appropriate for your level.
  • Keep airport transport separate from transport between camp and surf spots.

Lapoint explicitly excludes flights and transport to the camp from the package, with airport transfer available as an addition. That is a useful distinction when calculating the total. A local surf-spot transfer does not get you from Colombo airport to the south coast. [3]

Check children, instruction and emergency arrangements

Soul & Surf's terms exclude children under seven. They require younger children in the stated 7–12 band to demonstrate swimming ability and have a parent in the water; the 12–16 band requires parental presence on the beach. Because age 12 appears in both bands, confirm the exact arrangement for a twelve-year-old. These are that school's rules, not a national age standard. [2]

For any school, ask about the instructor's relevant qualification, current first-aid and rescue training, the group headcount and the procedure if someone needs assistance. A surfing qualification and a complete emergency plan are separate matters. Ask how the school chooses a different spot or cancels when the conditions do not suit the group.

Parents should clarify their own role. Watching from a café, remaining on the beach and being in the water are different commitments. Ask whether an accompanying parent may join the lesson or needs to remain available solely to support the child. Then check that the rest of the family's plan allows that arrangement.

Tell the school about any relevant limitations before arrival and follow its assessment. For questions about personal medical fitness, use a qualified clinician rather than relying on a camp's promotional description. Check your own policy's coverage for surfing and the type of instruction you are purchasing.

Read cancellation terms before filling the rest of the trip

Soul & Surf's school terms require valid insurance covering water sports and describe lessons as generally nonrefundable, with specified operator-cancellation exceptions. They also address weather and ocean conditions. Confirm what remedy applies to a weather-shortened or unused session instead of assuming every cancellation produces cash back. [2]

Ask the same questions of a residential camp: whether unused lessons are refunded, replaced or lost, whether accommodation has separate terms, and what happens if the participant is placed in a different level. A free rebooking offer is not necessarily a cash-refund right, and it may have a deadline or availability limits.

  1. Choose the coast and confirm the camp's dates.
  2. Describe each participant's surfing and swimming ability.
  3. Get the exact lesson, equipment, room and meal inclusions.
  4. Check cancellation, weather changes and transfer arrangements.
  5. Leave a manageable arrival day and time to rest between sessions.

For a first attempt, book a lesson that fits an otherwise enjoyable beach stay. For a learning-focused week, protect the lesson schedule from long sightseeing excursions and late arrival transfers. More activities on the booking confirmation do not automatically create a better week if they compete with sleep, practice and recovery.

BEFORE YOU GO

Common questions

Is Arugam Bay or the south coast better for a first lesson?

Start with the season and the school, then the specific beach. The south coast is commonly planned for November–April, while Sri Lanka Tourism describes April–October for Arugam Bay. A qualified school's assessment of the day's conditions matters more than a destination's beginner-friendly label. [4] [5]

Does a surf camp always include accommodation?

No. Some progression weeks are non-residential courses, while residential packages specify a number of nights and a room type. Check the written inclusions and compare the complete cost of accommodation, meals, lessons and transfers.

Is surf guiding suitable for a complete beginner?

Do not assume so. Guiding can be designed for experienced surfers who already surf independently. Book beginner instruction and explain your swimming ability and experience before purchase.
