The hardest part of a first Turkey itinerary is deciding what to leave out. Start with Istanbul and Cappadocia; give the journey between them a real place in the calendar before adding Ephesus or the coast. These seven-, ten- and fourteen-day routes show what each extra stretch of time can realistically buy you.
These are suggested routes, not a package or a promise of flight availability. Calendar days include arrival and departure; hotel nights are counted separately. Adjust the sequence to the airports and services actually available for your dates.
Choose the route length and the real endpoints
| Time available | Suggested scope | What to leave out |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days / 6 nights | Istanbul and a compact Cappadocia stay | A third region unless you remove something else |
| 10 days / 9 nights | Two bases with more full days and a return buffer | Extra hotel changes without a clear purpose |
| 14 days / 13 nights | Istanbul, Cappadocia and one additional region | A coast-to-coast checklist requiring repeated long moves |
Read the airport codes on every flight. IST and SAW are separate Istanbul airports; NAV and ASR are different Cappadocia gateways. GoTürkiye identifies Nevşehir and Kayseri as regional arrival points. Match the hotel transfer to the selected flight rather than booking a generic Cappadocia pickup. [1]
Before committing to an onward route, check the official travel advice for each region you intend to enter. An Istanbul–Cappadocia itinerary should not be read as advice about every border area or every part of the country. [2]
Seven days: the compact two-region introduction
| Day | Plan | Overnight |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive, reach the Istanbul hotel and keep dinner nearby | Istanbul |
| 2 | Historic peninsula, with actual site opening days checked | Istanbul |
| 3 | A waterfront or neighborhood day with one main cultural visit | Istanbul |
| 4 | Fly to NAV or ASR and transfer to the Cappadocia base | Cappadocia |
| 5 | One possible balloon morning and a local sightseeing cluster | Cappadocia |
| 6 | A modest morning, then return to Istanbul | Istanbul |
| 7 | International departure with the correct airport transfer | — |
This version is compact. Day 6 is not automatically a second guaranteed balloon chance: the flight, return-to-hotel time and airport transfer may not fit. If the balloon is the main purpose, use more days or reduce Istanbul rather than making a weather-dependent morning carry the whole trip.
For a short visit focused on food and history, staying in Istanbul throughout is also a valid choice. You can give the city more time and avoid two domestic airport journeys. Two regions are an option, not a minimum required for a successful holiday.

Ten days: more time where it improves the trip
| Days | Base and nights | Usable time |
|---|---|---|
| 1–4 | Istanbul: 4 nights | Arrival plus three full city days |
| 5–8 | Cappadocia: 4 nights | Travel day plus three full days |
| 9 | Istanbul: 1 night | Return flight and a flexible final afternoon |
| 10 | Departure | Airport journey and international flight |
The extra Cappadocia time allows a nearby heritage day, one longer road excursion and a flexible day. It also creates more opportunities to ask about balloon rebooking after a cancellation, though neither weather nor spare seats is guaranteed. Royal Balloon's FAQ explicitly directs canceled guests to ask about following-day options. [3]
If you are not interested in ballooning or long regional outings, move a night back to Istanbul. Use it for Kadıköy, a museum or a slower waterfront day. The value of the tenth day is flexibility, not the number of attractions you can add.
Fourteen days: add one region with a clear purpose
One workable allocation is Istanbul for four nights, Cappadocia for four, a third region for four, and a final Istanbul night. That totals thirteen nights. The third-region transfer must be checked before you book the hotel: a direct flight may not operate on your chosen date, and a connection uses more of the day.
| Third-region choice | Why add it | What to arrange |
|---|---|---|
| Selçuk / Ephesus area | A substantial archaeological visit and a different setting | The actual arrival airport or station, local transfers and site tickets |
| Antalya area | Coastal downtime with selected cultural outings | A hotel base that suits your beach and transport needs |
| More Istanbul and Cappadocia | Fewer transfers and a slower trip | Add interest-led days rather than another airport |
For Ephesus, use the Ministry of Culture and Tourism's site information for current access and ticket details. Keep separately ticketed areas and guided transport distinct in the budget. Do not squeeze a major site visit between two long transfer legs simply because the map appears compact. [4]
For a coast addition, choose a room you can enjoy for several nights. An expensive resort night reached after dark and left before breakfast delivers little of the experience you were paying for. Check seasonal facilities and the transfer cost before comparing room rates.
Keep travel days honest
A domestic flight day includes checkout, the city-airport journey, airline deadlines, the flight, bags and the final hotel transfer. Put those steps into the plan before promising an afternoon tour. If using an overnight bus, account for rest and the gap before the room is available.
For separate domestic and international tickets, consider returning to the international-departure city the previous day. This does not eliminate disruption, but it avoids making your long-haul flight depend on every earlier step running exactly on schedule. An IST–SAW airport change needs its own cross-city plan.
Book transport for the route you can sustain. A lower fare with a very early departure may require an extra transfer, lost breakfast or little sleep. Compare the entire door-to-door cost and the quality of the day on arrival, especially when traveling with children.
Choose the rooms and experiences that support the route
In Istanbul, shortlist Sultanahmet for a historic-site-focused stay, Karaköy for waterfront connections, or Kadıköy when the Asian side is part of the experience. In Cappadocia, a car-free visitor should confirm walks to meals and pickup coverage for the exact property. A district label cannot answer those questions.
Keep the balloon flight, museum entry, guided road tour and hotel transfer as separate lines even when sold in a package. Ask who operates each element and what happens if one is canceled. A weather refund for a balloon may not refund the hotel, airport transfer or remaining tour.
- Reserve the core rooms with cancellation deadlines you understand.
- Confirm baggage and airport codes for every flight.
- Place Topkapı around its Tuesday closure. [5]
- Keep a ground plan for any canceled balloon morning.
- Arrange mobile setup before entering Türkiye if using a provider with local access restrictions.
A route budget without invented daily averages
Build your own total from international flights, domestic transport with bags, nights by region, airport transfers, selected admissions and meals. Add the balloon only if you intend to buy it. Divide a private vehicle by the actual party size, while keeping per-person admissions separate.
Compare a seven-day and ten-day version using real quotes for the same standards. Extra nights may be the largest difference, but moving to a third region can also add flights and transfers. Record which costs are confirmed, which are quotes and which are your chosen allowances; do not turn a planning assumption into a national average.
BEFORE YOU GO
Common questions
Can I see Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast in a week?
You can attempt it, but the transfers consume much of the trip. Choose two regions or make a clear substitution rather than adding a third region to the compact plan.
Do I need to rent a car?
Not for the core route if you use flights, city transport and confirmed Cappadocia transfers or tours. A rural or coastal addition may change the comparison.
Why return to Istanbul the night before departure?
It creates a buffer between separate domestic and international tickets. Check the actual departure airport and remember that the buffer reduces dependence on timing without guaranteeing against disruption.
