Split Airport to the City or Hvar: Transport and Same-Day Connections
Compare the Split airport shuttle, local bus and private transfer, then build a realistic onward ferry connection to Hvar with luggage and delay margins.

Split Airport and Split's ferry port are separate stages of a journey. A flight's scheduled landing time is not the time you can board a city bus, and arriving at the port is not the same as being ready at the correct ship. Those distinctions matter most when the next booking is on an island.
Choose the transfer by your final destination, party size and luggage. A traveler going to a central room, a family heading to a beach hotel and someone connecting to Stari Grad should not automatically choose the same transport.
Compare the three main approaches
| Option | Useful for | Cost and practical limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Platanus airport shuttle | Main bus station and ferry-port area | €10 one way; then walk to your berth or room |
| Promet local bus | A lower-cost journey when the stop suits you | Official page lists €3 to Split; more stops and a final city leg |
| Taxi or booked transfer | A group, bulky luggage or an inconvenient hotel location | Compare a total quote including waiting and luggage |
The shuttle and local-bus figures come from the operators' current information, not a claim about the cheapest possible fare for every ticket channel. Promet also lists €2.50 toward Trogir. Check the direction before boarding if your accommodation is on that side of the airport. [1] [2]
For several people, multiply the per-person bus cost and add any city taxi needed at the end. Compare that total with a vehicle quote for the whole party. A private transfer becomes more attractive when it removes a difficult final leg, but a per-vehicle price is useful only if all passengers and bags fit.
Use the airport shuttle for the port-side city arrival
Platanus describes airport departures linked to arriving flights, with pickup in parking zone P1 and arrival at Split's main bus station near the railway and ferry facilities. One suitcase is included, and a mobile QR ticket can be used. The listed road time is approximately 30 minutes, subject to traffic. [1]
After collecting luggage, follow the current airport signs and confirm the bus destination with staff. Keep the ticket available offline so a weak connection does not delay boarding. If you are connecting to a ferry, keep essential documents and medication in a bag you can carry easily while collecting the suitcase.
At the main bus station, identify your ferry operator and berth before stopping for food. The port is not one single boarding door. Use the instructions on the ticket and the current departure information, and ask staff if a ship or pier assignment has changed.

When the local bus makes sense
Promet's airport-line page shows line 37 between Split, the airport and Trogir, with separate weekday, Saturday and Sunday/holiday schedules. Its stated airport–Split journey is around 50 minutes. Timetable departures from Split or Trogir should not be mistaken for the bus's exact airport passing time. [2]
Before choosing it, open the operator's current map for the city stop and compare the walk to your accommodation. Do not assume the local bus uses the same terminal as the port shuttle. A lower fare may be a good trade for someone with a small bag and no deadline, but less useful for a tight boat connection.
Check the correct side of the road and destination display at the airport stop. With a stroller or several large bags, think through the actual boarding process and the last leg rather than comparing fares alone. Keep enough time to wait for another bus if the first is impractical for your party.
If the local bus gets you close to your hotel, there is no reason to travel to the ferry port first. Plot the complete journey once, save the stop and hotel address, and avoid changing plans based only on another passenger's different destination.
Build an airport-to-Hvar connection backward
First choose the correct island port. Hvar Town passenger services and the Split–Stari Grad vehicle ferry solve different journeys. The Hvar tourist board lists several access routes; use the one that matches your accommodation and the date you travel. [3] [4]
- Write down the ferry's boarding requirements and departure time.
- Subtract a port arrival margin, then allow for the road transfer and possible waiting for it.
- Add time after landing for the applicable arrival formalities and checked bags.
- Ask whether a delayed flight leaves another realistic sailing; if not, compare a Split overnight.
Do not use one fixed minimum connection time for every flight. A traveler with hand baggage already within the relevant travel area has a different process from someone needing border formalities and checked luggage. Summer traffic, a late aircraft and a slow bag delivery can occur on the same journey.
For illustration, a flight scheduled to land at 14:00 and a ferry at 15:00 leaves only one hour for every airport task, transfer and boarding step. That is not a sound plan simply because the shuttle's advertised road time is around half an hour. This example explains the calculation; it is not a recommended minimum buffer.
If a later boat reaches Stari Grad instead of Hvar Town, check the onward transfer before treating it as your backup. The boat may solve the sea crossing while creating a late island-road journey. Contact the accommodation if the arrival plan changes.
What to ask a private-transfer provider
Request a quote for the exact flight, destination, passengers and bags. Ask whether the driver monitors delays, where the meeting point is, how much waiting is included and what happens if the flight is canceled or moved. A fixed fare is only useful when the conditions behind it are clear.
- State child-seat needs and the child's relevant details before payment.
- Confirm whether a ferry-port drop-off includes help identifying the terminal or only a roadside stop.
- Check late-night charges, extra stops and the cancellation deadline.
- Save the provider's contact number and the booking reference offline.
A road driver cannot guarantee a ferry connection controlled by another operator. Be cautious about treating a fast-transfer claim as protection for a separate boat ticket. If a connection is essential, leave enough time for an ordinary road journey rather than relying on unusually favorable traffic.
Returning to the airport is a separate plan
Platanus publishes fixed city departures from the main bus station, with its bus at platform 1, and a direct journey to the terminal. Check the schedule for your departure day instead of assuming an airport-arrival arrangement works in reverse. [5]
Split Airport warns about road congestion on the approach. Work backward from the airline's required airport arrival time, not from takeoff. Add travel time, waiting and a traffic allowance, then choose the earlier practical departure when missing the flight would have serious consequences. [6]
When coming from Hvar, our preferred plan is to sleep on the mainland before flying. If you choose the same day, check both the ferry's operational notices and the road transfer, and keep a realistic fallback. Separate transport tickets do not create an automatic protected connection.
BEFORE YOU GO
Common questions
Does the airport shuttle take me directly to Hvar?
No. The road shuttle takes you to Split. You then need the correct boat ticket and, depending on the island port, another transfer to the accommodation.
Is the €3 local bus always the best choice?
It can be good value when the city stop and walking route suit you. Compare the complete trip, including luggage, waiting and any final taxi, especially when connecting to a ferry.
How much time should I leave between a flight and a ferry?
Calculate it for the actual flights and sailings. Include arrival formalities, bags, waiting, road traffic, the walk to the berth and boarding requirements. If a modest delay breaks the plan, choose a later sailing or a mainland night.
