Sri Lanka’s published visa arrangements have changed, so an old blog or an older withdrawn notice is a poor shortcut. Start with the current Immigration and Emigration notice and the official ETA service.

Separate three questions: which route fits your passport and purpose, whether that route has a fee, and how long you may stay. A fee exemption does not by itself remove the application.

Use the current official ETA route

The official Electronic Travel Authorization service identifies the Department of Immigration and Emigration as the issuing authority and directs visitors to the relevant short-visit process. Read the current notices before choosing the tourism category. [1]

Use the nationality of the passport you will carry. If you hold an emergency or special document, or intend work, study or another purpose, obtain the correct official advice before relying on a tourist arrangement. Keep your application consistent with the actual reason for the visit.

Understand the 40-country fee exemption

The official notice, effective 25 May 2026, lists 40 selected nationalities, including Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. It provides a tourist ETA free of charge for the stated 30-day arrangement and says advance ETA is still required. [2]

QuestionWhat to check
Is my passport on the current list?Read the official nationality notice
Is the ETA free?Check the fee rule for the selected passport and purpose
Must I apply?Read the authorization requirement separately
How long may I stay?Check the actual approval and entry conditions

Do not pay a private seller just because its advert uses the word official. A provider’s service fee and a government visa fee are different charges.

Prepare details before applying

  • The passport used for travel, with its identity and expiry details.
  • Your intended arrival date and actual travel purpose.
  • The first accommodation address and a reachable contact.
  • Your return or onward itinerary.
  • An email account you can access during the trip.

Compare the form with the passport character by character. Resolve an uncertain name order, nationality selection or document category before submission. A booking agency’s traveler profile is not a substitute for the actual travel document.

Complete and review the application

Follow the official service’s application instructions for the selected route. Use real intended dates rather than a date copied from someone else’s example, and read the terms displayed before sending the form. The government’s short-visit page distinguishes tourist, business and transit purposes. [3]

  1. Confirm the passport and purpose selection.
  2. Enter identity, travel and stay information.
  3. Review names, document number and dates.
  4. Complete the official submission and retain the reference.
  5. Check approval status rather than treating an acknowledgement as final permission.

Do not submit repeated applications solely because an email has not arrived immediately. Use the official status or contact process first.

Read the permitted stay and re-entry conditions

The 40-country notice describes a 30-day tourist arrangement with double entry within the initial 30-day period. A second entry is not a fresh 30-day stay. Apply the wording on your own approval and entry record. [2] [3]

If you want to stay longer, use the official extension route before permission expires. A flight or accommodation change is not an extension. Keep enough margin around the planned departure to handle a delay without relying on an informal promise that extra days will be acceptable.

Prepare for arrival and changing plans

Save the approval, booking references and first accommodation offline, and keep the passport linked to the application. Check passport-validity and supporting-document requirements again in the official process before departure, particularly if a document has been renewed.

  1. Check the newest immigration notice for your dates.
  2. Confirm that the ETA is approved under the correct passport.
  3. Keep the arrival and onward documents accessible.
  4. Use the official issuer’s guidance if information changes.
  5. Leave time for system outages or payment-service maintenance.

A third-party promise of fast approval cannot replace the official decision. For a situation that does not match the published tourism route, contact the responsible Sri Lankan authority or mission.

Check the document, approval and trip as separate items

ItemWhat a traveler should verifyWhat it does not prove
PassportCorrect identity details and sufficient validityThat an ETA has been approved
Application acknowledgementA reference for the submitted requestFinal permission to travel under the requested route
ETA approvalMatching passport, purpose and stated conditionsAn unlimited stay or permission for a different activity
Flight and hotel bookingsA coherent arrival and onward planThat immigration conditions have been waived

For British citizen passports, the UK government specifies an expiry date at least six months after arrival. A short holiday does not reduce that requirement to the departure day. Check the corresponding official guidance for any other document category, especially an emergency passport. [4]

For a family, create a small checklist per traveler and verify the passport number, name and date fields independently. Copying the lead traveler's details into another person's form is an avoidable source of errors. Use an email address that remains accessible during the journey and retain the actual approval document, not just a screenshot of the payment or submission page.

Handle a changed passport, delayed answer or longer visit

If the passport is renewed after application, contact the official issuer about how the authorization must be handled. Do not assume the airline can update an immigration record when it changes the document in the flight booking. Keep the old and new references available when seeking advice, but transmit passport copies only through an appropriate official channel.

If an answer has not arrived, check the official status process and the email spam folder before submitting again. Record the reference and submission date. A third-party promise to resolve the delay is not proof that it has access to the government decision. Leave enough time before travel that a correction does not become an airport problem.

If you plan to leave and return during the trip, put both visits on the same timeline. The second arrival should not be used as an informal way to extend the original allowance. For a stay beyond the permitted period, use the official extension process and obtain the required outcome before relying on the additional days. [2]

  1. Complete the nationality and purpose check before applying.
  2. Review the approved details against the actual passport.
  3. Save the first address and onward booking offline.
  4. Recheck the newest immigration notice before departure.
  5. If the plan changes materially, resolve the document question before buying replacement non-refundable travel.

This guide covers ordinary tourist planning. An unusual purpose, previous immigration issue or special travel document needs a case-specific official answer. Keep that answer with the trip records so the whole party understands which conditions apply.

BEFORE YOU GO

Common questions

Does a free ETA mean I do not need to apply?

No. The current fee-exemption notice still requires advance ETA for the listed nationalities. The price and authorization requirement are separate.

Does a second entry restart the 30 days?

The notice describes double entry within the period from first arrival, not a new allowance after each entry. Check your own approval and entry conditions.

Can I use a tourist ETA for every purpose?

No. The official short-visit process separates tourism, business and transit, and other purposes need their own route.
