Older advice can send travelers to an e-Visa application they no longer need. The reliable starting point is Türkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs nationality list, followed by the application route it identifies for your particular passport.
This guide covers short tourist travel. A residence address abroad, a work assignment or a special passport can change the assessment, so do not use an ordinary-passport tourist rule as a universal answer.
Start with nationality and passport category
Read the passport you will carry and find that nationality in the ministry’s list. Check the line for ordinary, official or another document category as applicable. The list distinguishes ordinary passports from diplomatic and official passports, and some nationality entries have additional age, residence-document or purpose conditions. [1]
If you are traveling on an emergency document or a document with a nationality category different from the one assumed in a travel blog, resolve it with the relevant Turkish mission. Being resident in a visa-exempt country is not the same as holding its passport.
Check exemption before buying an e-Visa
| Ordinary tourist passport | Current published short-visit rule | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Visa-exempt: up to 90 days in 180 | Official passports have a different entry |
| Canada | Visa-exempt: up to 90 days in 180 | Read the actual passport category |
| Australia | Visa-exempt: up to 90 days in 180 | Official passports have a different entry |
| United Kingdom | Visa-exempt: up to 90 days in 180 | The ministry lists separate British nationality categories |
A nationality not in this table needs its own lookup. The table is a starting point for the principal readership, not a list of every passport eligible to visit Türkiye.
Understand conditional e-Visa eligibility
If the nationality entry directs you to an e-Visa, use the official government service and read every condition displayed for the selected passport. A supporting visa or residence permit may be part of a specific route; it does not create a general exemption for everyone who holds that document. [2]
Keep the application, payment and document download in the official service. An advertisement or a higher-priced intermediary is not evidence of an extra immigration requirement. If a consular visa is required instead, an online tourist product cannot replace it.
Separate validity from time you may stay
A visa’s usable dates, the number of entries and the permitted stay are different fields. Count any previous relevant visits when a rolling 180-day limit applies. An exit and immediate return is not a reason to assume the allowance starts again.
Write down arrival, departure and earlier stay dates before buying tickets. If a delay would put the trip close to the limit, leave margin or obtain an official answer about your circumstances. Keep the entry record and departure plan together so you can check what was actually granted.
Check passport and supporting documents
The ministry’s passport guidance describes validity at least 60 days beyond the permitted stay, with specified exceptions. Its visa information also recommends at least six months from arrival. Apply the official rule for your document and leave practical margin rather than treating a general recommendation as the only legal test. [3] [1]
- Check passport issue and expiry details against the selected route.
- Carry the same document used for any e-Visa application.
- Save accommodation, return or onward travel and authorization records offline.
- Keep family and special-travel documents accessible to the relevant traveler.
Finish with a consistent arrival file
- Confirm the current nationality and passport rule.
- Apply only for the visa route actually required.
- Check permitted days, passport validity and supporting conditions.
- Match flight, accommodation and visa details.
- Read any new official notice before departure.
Check with your airline if boarding documentation is unclear, while keeping the Turkish authorities’ requirements as the immigration reference. If the purpose changes from tourism to work or study, revisit the route instead of keeping a tourist authorization merely because it has remaining validity.
Use a passport checklist rather than a visa advertisement
| Question | What to record | When to resolve it |
|---|---|---|
| Which travel document? | Nationality and exact passport category, including emergency or special documents | Before buying a non-refundable flight |
| Which purpose? | Tourism, business or a different activity; do not substitute a tourist category for work | Before choosing an application route |
| Any earlier visits? | Entry and exit dates in the relevant rolling period | Before fixing this trip's duration |
| Enough validity? | Expiry date against the permitted stay and any document-specific exception | Before applying or checking in |
| Any supporting condition? | The actual visa or residence document required by your eligibility route | Before paying for an e-Visa |
For an ordinary British citizen passport, the UK government currently specifies at least 150 days of passport validity from arrival and at least one blank page. Its tourist allowance is up to 90 days in any 180-day period. That is a useful worked example of why 'valid until after my flight home' is insufficient, even for a one-week holiday. Other British nationality categories must be checked separately. [4]
Türkiye's ministry explains the general validity rule as 60 days beyond the duration of stay granted by the visa, exemption or residence permit. Its example for a 90-day stay is therefore 150 days. Do not calculate it from the seven nights you intend to book when the applicable rule uses the granted duration. If your passport falls under an exception, retain the official explanation rather than relying on a forum answer. [3]
Prepare for connections and last-minute changes
Make one arrival folder with the passport details, relevant authorization if required, first hotel address, departure booking and a simple list of previous Turkish visits. A family should check each traveler's document individually. A parent being exempt does not establish a child's eligibility, and an airline booking confirmation is not an immigration authorization.
Separate a connection that stays airside from a plan that enters Türkiye. An overnight hotel outside the airport, collecting and rechecking baggage, or changing between Istanbul's airports can require admission to the country. Ask the airline what your exact tickets require; do not decide from the word 'transit' alone.
- Recheck the ministry entry for every passport close to departure.
- Match names and passport numbers on any authorization to the document being carried.
- Keep an offline copy of the application result and supporting records, without sharing passport images in public travel groups.
- If a cancellation extends the trip near the permitted limit, contact the relevant authority before assuming an airline disruption creates an automatic extension.
This preparation does not guarantee admission, but it gives you a clear way to find and fix a mismatch before reaching the airport. A consulate or the relevant immigration authority is the appropriate place for an unusual document, an overstay history or a purpose beyond ordinary tourism.

Common questions
Do US tourists still need an e-Visa?
Use the ordinary-US-passport entry in the table and recheck the ministry’s current rule for your travel dates. Different passport categories can have different requirements.
Does a residence permit change my nationality?
No. It may support a specific conditional visa route for certain passports, but you should start with the nationality and category of the document you will use.
Does a visa valid for six months allow a six-month stay?
Not automatically. Read the permitted duration, entry count and any rolling-period rule separately from the visa’s overall validity dates.
